My 4 watch promise...possible change ups for 2012/2013

So I tend to have a pretty addictive personality, much like the rest of you I'm sure, and this addictive personality caught on to watches last year when I bought my first real watch with my TAG Heuer Carrera. Since then I've acquired a Great White, a Planet Ocean and a Sinn 656L.

My wife knew right away that this was going to become another obsession of mine, so when she got me my four watch winder I promised her I'd never own more than four watches at any time. Well, it hasn't taken long for me to fill up the winder.

The problem is that there are three watches on my mind right now:

    Rolex Sub-C (black)
    Omega SMP-C (blue)
    Omega Speedmaster Racing (yellow)

Of the four watches I own now, I think the only one I could honestly never let go of is the Planet Ocean. I like the Great White a lot, but really don't ever use the GMT function. I love the Sinn 656L, but it's such a rare watch I don't wear it a whole bunch. The TAG, well it's almost not worth selling that one because I'd take such a big loss and it is a nice dress watch, but I don't have an overwhelming attachment to it.

Of the three I'm looking at, I "must have" the blue SMP-C, I'd really like a Sub-C and the Speedmaster would be a cool casual watch. Right now I feel like I have a watch for every dress attire ranging from suits, to jeans to khacki shorts, of course many will argue the PO alone fulfills that.

Anyone care to chime in with thoughts/opinions? I've definitely thought about the argument of having four watches in the winder and one on my wrist.

"Honey, I meant I'll never have more than four watches not on my wrist!"

I say get rid of the Sinn as you seldom wear it, the great white you seem to not be bothered so sell that too. With the funds from those it would go a fair way to at least getting the SMP-C. See how you get on with that and then maybe head towards a Sub-C. However if you got the SMP-C in black it could kill the Sub craving and you could then look into getting the Speedmaster racing.

It's a fun situation to be for sure and yes the PO you already own is perfectly suited for everything.

    Good luck in your choices.

All I know is I waited and waited and waited some more to buy the Sub-C. It's the one I really wanted. I toyed with the idea of selling a bunch of watches to help fund it and decided to just buy it outright instead. It was only after I had owned the Sub-C for over a month that I realized that I had only worn one of my other watches for a day or two...they were just sitting there on the dresser, so I sold 'em. Haven't regretted it yet.

My words of advice: Get what you REALLY want and then build your collection from there.

    Hard decisions for sure.

My Sinn 656L is almost untouchable and the sleeper in my collection. I would be hard pressed to let it go.

The TAG I could live without and although the "Great White" is my favorite Omega GMT, I would not miss it.

The PO is a great diver so you don't need the Sub or the SMP

And there is only one Speedmaster, the Professional.

Personally, I could live comfortably with a PO, the Sinn, and a Speedy Pro.

(Admittedly I am biased against the Sub, especially the C.)

I'm pretty partial to divers, so I have no issue owning multiple dive watches. I'm not a big fan of chronographs in general, I like the Speedmaster racing because it's just really sporty looking IMO.

An interesting dive collection could be the PO, Sub-C, SMP-C and Great White.

Re: My 4 watch promise...possible change ups for 2012/2013

I had been very happy with my PO for a few years and then the Sub-C caught my eye. I saved and sold off a few of my less worn watches and bought the Sub. Just like Zidane, I found the Sub-C to be on my wrist daily and even though I loved the PO, I decided to sell it because I could not see myself wearing it much any more. I almost wish that I did not see the Sub-C because the PO can really make an awesome daily wearer and I would have saved a lot of money. I would sell the Sinn, and the Great White and either buy the SMPc or save up and get the Sub-C. I would only get the SMPc if you are considering the blue dial, because it would be too redundant to have it in black with either a PO or a Sub-C IMHO. It is nice to have some variety, esp. in a small collection.

    Take your time>>>>>

I would keep what you have. Your collection has a lot of "Grail" watches. I'd keep them unless they are not getting worn.

If you are going to acquire, always move up or in a different direction (get something that you don't have).

    A Speedmaster Pro

    Or

    Submariner (No Date)

Both easily available on the 2nd hand market. The Dark Horses: Breitling Colt or Seiko Marine Master. Fantastic watches that won't break your bank.

As Frank says you have some pretty hard to come by watches there that you may struggle to replace if you change your mind down the line. There is certainly some duplication in the options you are looking at vs those you already have. It would take some long deliberations for me to make such a decision, but I would probably add in reference to upgrades in movements, finish, durability and variety in my thinking. Good luck and keep us in the loop.
