Any of you guys seen "The Matador," with Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinner? Fricken great movie. Just rent it. I believe he is wearing an Omega in this movie. Its one hell of a beautiful watch, whatever it is.
Yes I think the Matador is a great film. On the Thomas Crown Affair I remember reading somewhere that in the dance scene (great scene) at the black and white ball Brosnan wasnt allowed to be in a tux with the bow tie done up to make a clear distinction between TC and 007?
Well, it would be if it was actually Rolex V Omega.
Today it is Rolex V Smiths
I'm not sure which bit isn't entirely true.
The first Bond book was 'Casino Royale'. Bond is described as wearing a Rolex in that book. There was no mention of POW camps in that book and, as Derrida observes: 'there is nothing outside the text'. I believe Fleming mentions that he wears a Rolex as it conveniently doubles as a knuckle duster. I'm sure someone will dig the text up but it is years since I read the book.
It is perfectly true that many Swiss manufactures offered watches to POWs on extended terms. Rolex was certainly one of them; as was Omega, who also supplied watches to the British Forces.
I would be interested to see your sources for claiming Cubby Broccoli (the very singular producer) chose to replace Seiko watches with Omega to get a "a fresh european look". This claim seems odd given that there was a well publicised bidding war at the time...
The Rolexes supplied to POWs were boys size watches and regular times pieces. The Submariner wasn't built until the 50s. Also Rolex expected to be reimbursed for the watch after the war, it wasn't a gift.
Also according to Fleming's book, he simply stated Bond wearing an Oyster Perpetual Rolex, he didn't specify it was a Submariner ever from what I've gathered.
