Re: Omega Speedmaster/Speedmaster Professional Bezel Guide

I think my chart may be wrong. I have been looking for older watches and found a bunch of different bezels. More confusing than ever.

Eric, you are the font man. How many different fonts do you see?

Re: Omega Speedmaster/Speedmaster Professional Bezel Guide

I agree that it is confusing, when you focus on the dot position. I know I keep harping on about this, but it's really not that confusing, once you realize that, with every bezel change, the "Tachymeter" text changed. The Tachy text is different on every different Speedmaster bezel style, whereas the position of the dots is not different on every different bezel style. So, if we focus on the "Tachymeter," we are able to more precisely and more reliably identify and affix time periods to specific bezels.

I'm seeing three different bezels in your post:
    - Black Base (a new example in this thread!)
    - Tall Tachy with Accent over E
    - Tall Tachy without Accent over E

    To address the particular photos:
1 (1963) - Tall Tachy w/o Accent over E. I believe that this is not the original bezel. This style didn't appear until a few years later (I believe in '68).

    2 (1965) - Tall Tachy w/Accent over E. I believe this is the correct bezel for '65.

3 (1958) - Black Base. I believe this is the correct bezel for '58. This bezel would be transitioned in early in Speedy's life, replacing the original Silver Base bezel.

4 (1960) - Tall Tachy w/Accent over E. I believe this is not the original bezel. I believe this style didn't start to transition in until around '63.

5 (1962) - Tall Tachy w/o Accent over E. I believe this is not the original bezel. This style didn't appear until several years later (I believe in '68).

I can appreciate what you're doing in your chart, but I'm having trouble understanding its usefulness. It seems much easier and more useful, to view the different bezels in a linear timeline, from the first bezel style from 1957, to the modern bezel current being used. I've dug up some old research, which I'll attempt to merge with this discussion and post up later.

Re: Omega Speedmaster/Speedmaster Professional Bezel Guide

The following represents my best efforts to show the history of Speedmaster Professional Bezels. (Thanks to Rich for keeping this conversation flowing). Because Omega did not immediately stop using one style and start using another, there is overlap to the dates, or transition periods, where two different bezels may have been used in the same year. The dates are best estimates, based on observation and discussions with others, over the years.

The distinguishing characteristics I refer to are the color of the bezel, the shape of the "Tachymeter" text, and whether an accent appears over the first e in Tachymeter.

    1957-58 - Silver Base 1000 bezel
    Used on CK2915

    1958-1962 - Black Base 1000 bezel
    Used on CK2915, 2998

1962-1969 - Tall Tachy with Accent over E bezel
    Used on 105.002, 105.003, 105.012, 145.012, 145.022

1968-1990 - Tall Tachy without Accent over E bezel
note: variants exist with noticeably thicker font.
    Used on 145.012, 145.022, 3572.50, 3590.50

1990-1995 - Wide Tachy without Accent over E bezel
    Used on 3590.50, 3572.50, 3570.50

1995-present - Wide Tachy with Accent over E bezel
    Used on 3570.50, 3572.50, 3573.50,

I am open to any corrections, clarification, additions, etc. Also, these are definitely not the best photos, but they can always be swapped out for better ones. If you have a better photo of a particular bezel (preferably a straight-on shot), that you would be willing to have used, please share.

Re: Omega Speedmaster/Speedmaster Professional Bezel Guide

Richard, Eric - just wanted to send you gentlemen both (as well as everybody else) a sincere thanks for your posts, photographs, and work to keep this conversation going. As Richard mentioned in his original thread on this topic (Speedmaster pre pro and pro bezels), to date very little information was pulled together about bezels. I think this goes a long way toward helping the community understand, first of all, what bezel designs are out there; and then from there, which bezel designs were originally paired with which watch.

And given that records weren't kept at this level, and that multiple suppliers were used, simply compiling examples and building likelihoods/probabilities may be the best way to go about answering this question.

Thanks again to all! Please post any further information, pictures, examples, or questions about bezels as they become available.

    Mark

Re: Omega Speedmaster/Speedmaster Professional Bezel Guide

    Hi Eric,

Slight correction. The base 1000 bezels were only used up till 2998-2. This model is when they introduced the non 1000 bezel which resulted in a some having/some not. 2998-3 up to and including 2998-62 were all std tachy bezels. All 2998's have the ' over the E, dot over 90 & dot to lower right corner of 70. I've also got 2 slight variations of font from original 2998 bezels. (will post pics in the morning). 105.002 was also the same but thats moving into a new model.

Just to add, this is the main flow of things for 2998's with regard to bezels.

Photo's 2 (105.003) ,3 (2998-1/-2), & 4 (2998-3/-4) at the top of the page all appear to have period correct bezels fitted.

So, while a c.321 Speedmaster is much more likely to have a Tall Tachy text with accent over E bezel, I believe that the Tall Tachy text with no accent over E style may also be correct for a Speedmaster from around '68. But, that is a bit aside the point, and really just demonstrates again, how imprecise this is and how difficult it is to make definitive statements on exact dates. ((big snip))

I think I have exactly the sort of transitional 68 speedmaster you're describing. I just inherited it from my Grandpa, who recently passed. It looks like a mostly intact 1039 bracelet, too. Name: speedcrop.jpg

No known service history, but it has the "middle" bezel and the slab-sided second hand. Once I get it serviced I hope to know whether it had been previously repaired/serviced.

    Hello
I'm new to this forum but i accidentally found this amazing thread about the 321 inserts
Today i received a remark on another forum about my speedmaster 321 below...
According to this gentlemen the insert belongs on a 145022 and not on my 145012
Could you please advise me on this ?

Nice thread. Just posted another thread on a similar topic, bezel showing 220 rather than 200.

Just need to figure out how to post pics
