I would reserve the term vintage for anything in the 60s and earlier.
I believe that vintage omegas are a bargain compared some other brands – and don’t expect the vintage price to say at the current level for long

Re: When does my "old" watch become vintage?

How about this. A watch is vintage when it is no longer contemporary. It is independent of value. This vintage seamaster doesn't have the look of a contemporary seamaster.

However, this speedmaster is vintage, but still has a contemporary look, or you could say that the contemporary model has a vintage look. You can however, see signs of ageing and wear on this watch. So part of the definition of vintage watch would be that it may be showing signs of age and wear.

Then I went to the Patek Philippe website. I was surprised that they let me in but they did and I took a look around. The Calatrava is contemporary but has a vintage look that they descripe as "timeless classic", a euphemism for vintage. I guess you could also define the speedmaster pro as a timeless classic also.

As far as value is concerned, you have to take into account the time value of money. $1 in 1950 is worth $9.29 in 2011. If you bought a watch in 1950 for $100 and it is worth $464.50 today, it has lost half of its' value. Vintage doesn't have to be valuable, and the vintage market certainly fluctuates so a vintage item can at varies times gain or lose value.

So, what is a vintage watch?

When the value of it starts to go up because of its age.
Like a car, when you buy a brand new watch and use it, it loses the value over time. But when it gains it's value back because of its age, it becomes vintage .

    That's what I mean.

vintage has absolutely nothing to do with value. for example a plain 1950's Rado automatic is vintage, even tho if you can get one for pennies.
depends on its age, but i have not seen a specific age been mentioned. unlike cars, its 40 years (if i remember correctly) when they are called oldtimers

Then I went to the Patek Philippe website. I was surprised that they let me in but they did and I took a look around.
    made me laugh :)

The rule of thumb for antique is 100 years. Vintage is less well defined, but I think people are right that 40+ years is a good basic rule.

ALternative criteria: If it's in the Vintage Database or not. OMEGA Watches: Search

PS. Don't like the new database, older version was so much useful.

It seems to work the same once you open up all of the filters.

Re: When does my "old" watch become vintage?

I don't know if there is a precise definition on how vintage as concept is used with watches? The use on these fora suggest a totally different approach than say with cars. A veteran car can be quite old but I think - correct me if I'm wrong - that when Christie's etc. list cars for auctions a vintage car would be typically a Bentley Speed Six from 20's etc. , and cars from the era up untill the 30's. With clothes it's not nearly as old so the definition could perhaps be whatever there is a general consensus on within the wider audience of a topic.
