Incredibly, it’s 100 years since Seiko introduced its first wrist watch known as The Laurel. However, it’s clear that in the past 100 years Seiko have not rested on their laurels. Seiko President at the time Kintaro Hattori was determined that Seiko would always be “one step ahead of the rest”, and largely it has proven to be the case.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Laurel, it is therefore only fitting that one of Seiko’s most innovative technologies is at the core of the anniversary collection. Seiko Kinetic is a unique achievement, as it is still the only watch in the world to convert kinetic energy into power to drive an electronic movement.

Velatura is Seiko’s marine sports collection. First launched in 2007, it is now established as the watch of choice among many in the sailing community, including the leading athletes in the 49er Class, the Olympic class that first inspired the creation of the collection. The new Velatura collection includes many timepieces designed for the rigours of 49er racing at the highest level, but the flagship watch is the Kinetic Direct Drive Moon Phase. With the deep blue of the dial and the warm silver tone of the moon, the watch evokes the night sky as seen from the ocean.

The stubby hands have always bothered me on that series.

    Kind Regards,

No kidding. On the hour hand, the counterweight is almost as long as the pointer. Can't wait to see this in person though.

Aesthetics aside; Seiko is not the only one to have kinetic technology; the Swiss have Autoquartz which is the same. Seiko was first but not the only one.
Kinetic technology was obsolete before it was a couple of years old due to advances in battery technology and Seiko put the final nail in the coffin when it brought out the Spring Drive.

I love Seiko as much as anybody around here. But that watch is ugly.
