How to read Seiko Serial #'s

Okay so I have been wondering how to understand the Serial # on a Seiko,

    For Example: 123-456

1- Would this be the Year?

2- Would this be the Month?

3- Is this the dat it was made

456- Is this the production #

I am trying to figure out how many Orange Monsters are out there? Initially are they a limited production?

I know the Yellow Monster is a Limited Edition, but lets face it anyone can put Limited Edition on anything but what matters most is the production numer correct.

    partly correct.

the first number is the year (you have to guess the decade; "1" could be 1991, 2001, 2011)
the second is the month -> 1= Jan, 2= Feb, 3=March etc S= Sep, O= Oct, N= Nov, D= Dec)
last four digits = running number of that model
