    Looking for my 1st Seiko.

    Hello,

Lately I've been wanting to add a Seiko to my collection but not sure how to pick the right one. Nor can I tell the difference between a good one from a bad. I'm sure on a few things. It needs to be an automatic, I do not want a diver, needs to have a date window and a stainless steel bracelet. All suggestions that fit my criteria are welcomed.

    Thanks.

You couldn't have come here at a better time

    Seiko SARB

You can start out by checking out their entire Mechanical Line. SARB, SARC, SARN, SARD...

Not sure what price range you're looking at, but if your willing to spend a bit more, I would also recommend Grand Seiko, Ananta, Brightz, Credor, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I've been looking on ebay and saw a few seiko 5's on there for under $100. Is that what they generally go for or is it something that I should stay away from?

    Thanks again.

Re: Looking for my 1st Seiko.

The Seiko 5 line is the low price line of mechanical watches - there are some good ones, they are decent but not great movements. And are automatics.

The 6R15 is the SARB and SARY watches is a good step up, and the styling in the SARB line tends to be much more classic and dressy, IMHO.

Seiko Ananta is another step up and includes entry level spring drives.

Grand Seiko represents their value line in top-notch movements, with pure mechanical movements, pure quartz movements and the Spring Drive hybrid movement. They probably represent some of the best movements available today in an affordable watch - under $10K....

Be sure to check out the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) watches for some classics you won't see in the US stores.

    Have fun shopping.

Re: Looking for my 1st Seiko.

There's nothing really bad about the Seiko 5 line, it's just that they are cheaper. The fit and finish isn't as good as watches at the SARB level. The Seiko 5 line uses the 7s26 movement which doesn't hack or hand wind, but the SARB line uses the 6r15 which does.

Check out the SARB035, it's beautiful:

Re: Looking for my 1st Seiko.

Thank you for all of you recommendations so far. I am leaning toward a Seiko 5 at this point because its got all the features I am looking for and for the price I really cant go wrong. Plus, I think once I wear the watch for a little bit I would probably want to start looking into their higher end lines and most likely add to my collection.

Re: Looking for my 1st Seiko.

I finally purchased a Seiko and I did go for their "5'' line of watches. With all the options out there I was able to get model number SNK305K which runs on the 7S26 movement and from what I understand it's a pretty good movement. The price was good and the reviews I have read are vary good. It should be in within a couple of days and I will post a pic at that time.
