Just got my first Seiko5 in the mail yesterday, and I'm very pleased with it. I have a strap on order, although the included strap is better than I expected based on reviews.
Here's my question: I've seen pictures of these watches that have been polished to remove the matte finish, and I think they look really sharp. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Specifically:
I use a combination of Cape Cod Polish and 600 grit sandpaper, making sure I do not apply too much pressure to get a semi-gloss satin finish. Too much pressure would lead to a high polish which is not what I wanted. Here is my SNKN33 pictured in front fancy pizza:
If you are removing the bead-blasted finish, you will not have to remove anything from the watch head as long as you are careful the polished off gunk is washed from the surface and seams. Just remove the strap and go to town, um, gently.
SNK803 -The 37mm beige 5. I grew up on the other side of the state, but moved to the 'Burgh about 3 years ago. Honestly, the only things I miss about the Philly/Allentown area are my friends and Wawa. Pittsburgh rocks.
Yeah, for sure. I just use the 600-grit sandpaper because I am impatient, particularly with inconsequential parts like the buckle and Zulu-style keepers that come on the cheap Seiko factory straps.
OP - I live in Pittsburgh. I've never polished a bead blasted finish, but, I'd be willing to give it a shot. I use a Dremel with cotton polishing wheels and rubbing / polishing compounds.
Shiny! (Said in the voice of Kaylee on Firefly) It looks great! Blinging like a Breitling. Hrm... maybe I should shine up one of my Seiko 5 field watches in that manner. Polishing by hand can get a good shine but achieving the mirror-like high polish would take some effort. If that is what the OP is looking for, a rotary tool like a Dremel is probably the easiest solution.
