    What is a hybrid watch?

Is it the Spring Drive, Kinetic, or Solar? Or none of the above?

I'd say the Kinetic is the hybrid, because it's actually a quartz movement with winding rotor to charge the battery.

A watch when you wear it, it saves you money on gas in your car...lol

Seriously never heard the term before... Maybe a Spring Drive could be classified as a hybrid but never heard anyone call it that before.

Re: What is a hybrid watch?

A "hybrid watch" is a watch with movement that consists of a mechanical part and an electronic part for its proper functionnement, regardless of the type of power source.

The Seiko Spring Drive is hybrid because it has an electronic regulation system powered by a mechanical rotor + mainspring as power source.

The Omega SMP Quartz is hybrid because it has a jewelled mechanical movement powered by a motor with battery as power source.

All ana-digit watch be it battery / solar / kinetic operared are hybrid because they have mechanical + electronic parts in the movement.

Don't be confused with hybrid car which is a car with two redundant power-source (electric + combustion engine).

eh? then almost all quartz watches with hands would be hybrid, jewels or not

From what I read before in SD forums, they always call it a hybrid because of its automatic winding as power source and the quartz regulation. I'd say then the kinetic will also fall into that category, although the power it saves from the winding goes into a rechargeable battery rather than a spring.

Re: What is a hybrid watch?

In the popular parlance, watches come in three varieties (ignoring outliers like the Accutron tuning fork): Fully mechanical, fully electronic/quartz (e.g., the typical Casio), and hybrid.

In the opinion of some of us, it's meaningless to lump all watches that aren't fully mechanical or fully electronic as "hybrid," but that's the way the popular mind works.

Thus, a Spring Drive, which generates its own power like any other automatic watch, but has a electronic escapement, is lumped (in the popular mind, not the discerning mind ;) ) with watches that are largely electronic, battery powered, but have analog hands.

    Go figure.

Not that it really matters. Those of us who buy what we like rather than what we think others like don't really care about such silly labels. People who like to feel superior by dismissing the Spring Drive movement as a "quartz" watch like silly labels, but the rest of us can consider the source there....

Re: What is a hybrid watch?

The Spring Drive is considered a Hybrid for a few attributes....partly because it has a mechanical power source (the mainspring) but mainly because the escapement is both mechanical....spinning glide wheel driven by the spring unwinding....and electronic....the mechanical spinning glide wheel's speed is monitored and adjusted via an electro mechanical brake which is regulated by a quartz crystal.

Traditionally, a watch was classified as quartz or mechanical based on the escapement.....the SD escapement was so new and different, it began to be classified as hybrid.

Eco drive, kinetic etc. are basically quartz watches with alternative methods to keep the battery charged with traditional quartz driven movements.

Hybrid is an understatement with Spring Drives. Cyborg (forget Wikipedia def.) IMHO is more appropriate for this magnificent invention. Because it achieved the electronic accuracy of quartz (because it has one for its 'brain').

Any watch not being purely mechanical or digital is hybrid.
