I decided to buy this watch purely out of curiosity. As it only cost £5.67 I wasn't expecting an awful lot. The postage from HK was nearly twice as much as the watch! There are a lot of these quasi military watches on the bay and one or two articles both good and bad on the Forum.
It is sold as a WWll Frogman Navy Type Canteen Military Watch! Quite a mouthful. It's a sort of U Boat homage.
When I took it out of the box the first thing I noticed was the size, it's HUGE, it says 43mm (which it is) but feels a lot bigger, also the strap is HUGE!As a basic cheap everyday beater I suppose it's not bad really. As long as you're not too close it looks ok. The strap is actually ok (ish). It looks like quite thick leather. It's advertised as leather anyway. It was all in one piece and running when it arrived. To be fair to it I set the time and it's been quite accurate all day, so no grumbles there. The strap is slightly too wide for the buckle which is an aluminium casting and has to be twisted at an angle to get it through. The case looks like it's been finished with an old file and some emery paper.
It was advertised as having a Japanese movement but I haven't taken the back off to check it. It has a very slow unruffled grandfather clock stately sort of tick. The hands appear to be a bit "floppy" and the minute hand will move if you shake the watch. The crystal has a glass feel to it rather than plastic. Says Mineral on the advert.
So yes I've given it a bit of a knocking but only in a lighthearted way. For what it is, it's not bad at all really. You can't buy a gallon of petrol in the UK for this price. And because the case and buckle appear to be aluminium I think some careful fettling and polishing would make it look much more presentable. The advert actually states it's stainless steel but I suspect they might be using a bit of poets licence there. Look at the pictures of the lugs and they look like an aluminium casting with a poor finish.
In summary then it's a cheap rough and ready watch. It tells the time and date but for the cost it's not too bad at all. It might look slightly out of place by my Tao or Gerlach but will be ok to do the gardening in. The advert states the RRP is $99! Err................no! The price I paid is about right thanks.
