Vintage PARKER 45 - slightly leaking

    Dear friends,

my vintage Parker 45 is slightly leaking ink where the nib screws to the section of the pen. I wipe it with a cloth and soon after that it is wet again, enough to mess the fingers... it won't drip or fill the cap.. nothing like that, but that plastic part of the pen, where the nibs screws in, is ALWAYS wet.

Any help is much appreciated !

If you do not hear from here soon, I would try the appropriate area of the www.fountainpennetwork.com. They have more traffic in things like this.
    All the best,
    Dan

PS -- also be sure the nib is in all the way. I believe they pull out to allow replacing with other size nibs.

As Ravenna says, the Parker 45 came with replaceable nib-assemblies.

Perhaps empty the pen, disassemble it ENTIRELY and clean it and then put it back together and refill. See if that does the trick.

Hi all. I have posted there before posting here, and.. Believe it or not, zero replies for such a simple question !

I have disassebled it twice, but no luck. It is not like it leaks the whole ink out... It's very subtle, but that junctiom where the nib screws to the section, is always wet. If you touch it there, it's certain to mess your fingers. And, it's quite easy to touch there !

Well, I can't seem to remember having any issues, and I replaced my nib as I did not like the F nib that it came with. For the most part, I don't have my fingers that far up.

It is possible that for whatever reason, the nib unit does not fit flush with the section after being screwed in. Your choices may be to use shellac around the threads to fill what ever exists or go to espray to buy a replacement nib hoping that the section is OK. But if you use shellac, it will be very hard to disassemble.

Based on the prices, you may be able to get one for use as parts close to the same price as a nib.

    Good luck!

Ravenna, I don't really know what shellac is. Can I use regular "school" white glue ? A little bit around the threads ?

I just looked at your location and it said Brazil, so I am not sure where you could pick it up. Shellac is a resin that is dissolved in alcohol. Once applied and it dries, it creates a bond. It can usually be softened up with moderate heat. It is sometimes used in pen repairs. I bought a small bottle that may take forever to get used up.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Dan... I am trying to find out its name in portuguese.. or something else that would be similar and perform the same job... like silicone grease or silicone gel bond, or white "school" glue...

Short of shellac, I think silicone grease is your best bet. I would not use white school glue (we called it Elmer's Glue here) as it's extremely water soluble.

Some of the early Visconti Homo Sapiens had an issue with ink weeping/slowly leaking at the base of the section as you describe. Many owners were successful in rectifying the issue with silicone grease applied to the threads.

are you a bassplayer ? I'm a record engineer and PA mixer. THANKS THANKS THANKS for your help. This silicone grease is not that kind that turns into rubber once dry.. is it ? or you mean the regular silicone grease used for lubricating watch seals ?
