My wife put a stop to purchasing watches and straps so I started making my own from old baseball gloves I had. I found I really enjoyed it and then a few of my baseball buddies started asking for some. I've sold about 30 of them and being able to purchase some real watches and the wife I'm using that money for new watches. Let me know what you guys think. Be brutally honest. Keep in mind I do this as a hobby and something to pass the time. No pro here.
I used official MLB Rawlings balls and added lambskin to the inside. I used the same thread from the balls.
The 4 baseball straps were made for former Colorado Rockies pitcher Manny Corpas. 3 of the balls were used during the 2013 Rockies 20th Anniversary Season
Sounds good. Please PM me your address and lug size and I'll send you one. Can have it out to you by hopefully next Friday or sooner. The baseball ones look better as 20mm or 22mm. Although I did make Manny Corpas 24mm.
Thank you RooX. That was actually the first one I ever made. The color is actually closer to Navy with a hint of green. Had the catchers glove since high school about 11 years ago. The leather is extra soft from all the fastballs.
I love the idea and the examples you have. I would like to see a reverse pattern with a solid tan or dyed leather on the outside and the print on the bottom (wrist side), with the red Rawlings strap holder.
Thanks for all the input. I just do it as a hobby and not sure if I have priced them right. I sell them anywhere between $60-$80. My wife thinks I should be sell them for more but I do it because I enjoy it. I have a two straps going out to acl1986 tomorrow. Will wait for review and maybe a few more members will purchase. Thanks again.
Thank you. I play in a adult baseball league here in Denver and have made over 30 straps for other players. Some have given me their old gloves and requested certain players. At first I was buying a lot of gloves but it was just a waste because most people wanted a specific player they like. Now I wait for the request.
Just received two straps from Denver. Plan to put them on tomorrow and wear them for the weekend. Will give you guys a nice review of them!
So far, just taking them out of the package, they look and feel great. Super supple, as to be expect from a well worn glove. Texture is just right. Inner lining is extremely soft and comfortable on the wrist.
I'm a huge baseball fan and have been playing since I was 5 years old (now 29) and first noticed them on Pinterest. I then was searching to buy one but had no luck. I did find a website that made them but he quoted me $155 which at the time was more expensive than any watch I had. Being that I had so many gloves I decided I can maybe make myself one. I saw a thread here on how to make the straps and some of the tools used. After making a few some of my friends also wanted some and as time went I started purchasing more tools that would make it easier and actual leather tools. I'm still learning and mostly self taught. Trial and error. I also did a lot of research on looking for tools. I hand stitch every strap.
I think they certainly would appeal to a certain type of buyer. They obviously look well-made.
However, I noticed that you live in Colorado, as do I. That being the case, you may not find too many buyers here because we haven't had a professional baseball team in several years. The Rockies are a glorified Double A team that is a disgrace and an affront to all that is decent in this world. I've basically forgotten what a professional baseball team looks like.
Very nice. I bought a Steve Garvey Louisville Slugger glove a couple years ago to have a strap made from it but never found anyone to make one. Maybe you're the guy? Here's an idea for you. I saw this once and really liked it. I've tried to find pictures of it, but I haven't been able to. The strap was made from the back of the fingers with the finger seams going down the middle of the strap. The seams weren't all that straight, so it gave it more of a vintage look.
After looking at some images that would be a good looking strap. The idea of using the back of the glove is not hard to do but in the middle they have what is know as the "welt" which is a then piece joining the two pieces of leather. Sometimes the fingers aren't wide enough. Without looking at the glove are to say but no a problem to do. The reason why I don't usually use the back is because most people want the logos showing and the fingers don't normally have anything. Most of the time I just throw those parts away but if you would really like I can make a few straps using the fingers and pocket. If you would like to send me a photo to my cell I can give you some ideas 720-252-5455.
Ok guys. So I have been wearing one of the straps that Denver sent to me for about a week.
So far, great. Extremely comfortable, light weight. I have sweat on it and have worn it in the blistering 25 degree weather. It's been put through he ringer.
After a week of heavy use,it stands the same quality and feel as the day I got it. No fraying or cracking, no smell.
I have another strap from him that I will be wearing and testing out as well. Will report back soon. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Just came across this thread. I've played baseball all my life off and on. Would love to get one of these for my Sumo. Would also really like to take some nice pics of one on my Sumo and post them. Please PM with a price. I also have an idea for you that id like to see if you can do/would like to try. Very interested and look forward to hearing from you.
Got 5 gloves coming; Mickey mantle, Brook Robinson, Jackie Robinson, Whitney Ford, and Bob Schmidt. Here are a few photos will once I have them in hand.
awesum. luv the rawlings/derek jeter lighter tan colour black signature print- which ideally would be medium sized so as to not overpowered. would totally buy one of these in 22mm. congrats.
Derek Jeter is the best seller. I've done over 5 and doing one for a WUS member this week. I normally don't have any in stock as I make them as they are ordered. Takes me about 2-3 days from start to finish. 22mm is the perfect size. If your interested please send an PM and we can talk more. Thank you.
