What's the Deal with NATO straps?

In the world of watches, what does NATO mean? Surely it doesn't mean North Atlantic Treaty Organization. All the NATO straps I see here on the forum are cheap, unattractive, synthetic cloth straps on very expensive watches meant to have leather straps or, even better, steel bracelets.

OK, I'm ready for my education. Y'all let me have it! Tell me what I need to know about NATO straps. --Cracky Wainwright, on the front porch here in rural Alabama with a glass of locally brewed Singing River beer

Yeah I never understood it myself. I'd possibly see myself using a plain black one but never on a 3K watch. But to each their own I suppose.

    It does.

The answer seems simple: the straps were originally made for NATO troops, right? Interestingly enough, the term “NATO strap” came into use as a shortened version of NATO Stocking Number (NSN), and otherwise has very little to do with the strap carrying its namesake. The more appropriate name for the “NATO” strap is actually the “G10” — which is how we’ll refer to it from here. In 1973, “Strap, Wrist Watch” made its debut in the British Ministry of Defence Standard (DefStan) 66-15. For soldiers to get their hands on one, they had to fill out a form known as the G1098, or G10 for short. Subsequently, they could retrieve the strap at their unit’s supply store of the same name.

NATO straps are lightweight and comfortable for me. They can add some style and color as well.

off the top of my head:
summer + sweat = smelly, damaged leather
activity + rough surfaces = scratched up bracelet

then there's also the fact that NATO make for easy strap swaps = fun diversity without the hassle of springbars and potential lug scratches

I don't have an answer, but I totally read the question in Seinfeld's annoying voice...

Re: What's the Deal with NATO straps?

I figured NATO straps were just a result of the absolute cheapest military contract available.

I do think it's funny when someone gives the "Swiss Made" quality speech about their expensive, impractical watch, and then puts on a cheap NATO strap for practical reasons.
