I had surgery on my left wrist and now a bracelet is very uncomfortable to wear. So all of my watches are now on straps. I prefer the one piece, 3 ring Zulu over the Nato. As far as the buckle being on the side of your wrist, adjust the strap so it's opposite the watch head.

I don't like nylon NATOS or Zulus. They have absolutely no soul. On the other hand I love a nice custom leather NATO or Zulu strap. They have a lot of personality, everyone is different, which makes the whole package a one of a kind.

I will agree with the ease of changing, slip one out, slip another in. Going on vacation? bring a couple straps with you, the faded worn one for the pool or beach, slip on another that matches your outfit when going out. You can give your watch a very different look everytime you want to change things up, and strap changes require no tools, and take seconds. I think the popularity is directly related to the utility.

You can easily change them to match your mood, outfit, etc. They are easily washable when they get sweaty and nasty--take one off, throw in the laundry hamper, and throw a new one one. All mine keep the buckle opposite watch, but maybe that has to do with my wrist size.

It just doesn't work. Perlons I have never tried, something about them just looks sort of cheap and tacky.
I suspect those were some cheaper Chinese made straps. Not to disparage Chinese goods but my wrist is slightly smaller than yours and I did order some cheap China sourced straps off ebay in 2016 and I found them to be a good bit shorter than the straps I had bought a few years earlier from CheapestNatostraps and some other retailer (the name of which I cannot recall). The earlier straps were longer and required that the ends be folded out of the way. In comparison, the 2016 ebay straps comfortably fit through the second buckle but did have any excess that needed folding away. So even though they have lost that bit of charm and true functionality, I found them easier to wear on a daily basis.

So while I might agree with some posters than I don't necessarily like the extra buckles of the Nato as compared to Zulu, if you can get them in the correct length they can be fun to wear and switch up depending on your mood. I like to change strap colors and Natos are super easy to change, while being cheap and easy to clean.

I have often wondered the same thing. They just don't work on my wrist with all the extra strap bulky under my wrist.

I dislike how unforgiving steel bracelets are and leather straps don't suit my appearance.
