Looked at sideways on, there are few watches with prettier curves than an Oyster. The older, slower beat movements are really nice too

You got superb branding, engineering, quality and design (I have the sports range in mind) rolled into one? I don't think any other brand has amalgamated all that in an all rounded way as well as Rolex.
Very luxurious looking watch but it's not for me because : 1. I can't afford it 2. I can't carry it off (status, personality, social circle etc) 3. I won't feel safe with it on4. Gold rolexes are viewed as belonging to the 'uncle' (i.e. Old man) group where I'm from.
Feel amazing when it on my wrist
Rolex make great utility watches you can beat the snot out of. Nothing quite as cool as a beaten up well running Rolex.
I guess I'll never know because there is no way I'd ever pay that much for a watch. That's just me though, too much Scottish blood in my veins.![]()

First saw this thread a few days ago and never really knew how to answer the question. You could substitute the word Rolex for any other watch brand. Still don't really know how to answer it. Then I went back and re-read "what is the most influential factor that makes you want to buy it". Honestly, I never really desired a Rolex. Omega was always the brand that inspired me. But I think all us enthusiasts want to know what all the fuss is about Rolex, me included, so I bought one. So originally it was curiosity. When I first received my Expy, I looked at it, picked it up and felt it, adjusted the bracelet (so easy with those big meaty screws), snapped it on my wrist - and I knew immediately this is a very very special item. Now, 6 months later, my appreciation just keeps growing for this watch. It has been solely responsible for me selling off nearly all my other watches because I feel that they just don't compare - I always want to wear the Expy. It's every little thing about it - the oyster bracelet; the oyster case (yes M4tt you're so right); the thick, flat slab of crystal; the black lacquer dial you could drown inside and its perfect hands and markers; the way the 904L seems to shine like no other watch I've owned (I don't know if this is true or not but it sure looks like it to me); and of course no-one can really discount the attraction of the 'inhouseness' of the watch.
So it's not a simple answer for me, but hopefully I've provided an answer.
Omega Aqua Terra 2504.50 |IWC Mark XVI 325504 | Grand Seiko HAQ SBGX063 | Rolex Datejust 116200 | Hamilton Khaki H704450
Truthfully, mostly just the name Rolex. When people are getting you down, you can always think, oh .... you, I'm wearing a Rolex.
