Classic good looks of some of them (e.g., stainless Datejust, 16600 Sea Dweller, 16610 Sub, 14060M Sub), coupled with a reliable, accurate, rugged, in-house movement.

Like a Montblanc pen, a Rolex watch has become an icon that everyone knows. But it's important to remember why these brands became desirable in the first place -- the product was excellent. Both companies have embraced the luxury aspect of their heritage (including bling and glitz), which is understandable financially but unfortunate in some respects. I have been a pen collector for 35 years. I still think the Montblanc 146 and 149 are fantastic pens, with a unique look, superb nibs, and excellent balance in hand. I have many other pens (Pelikans, Parkers, Conway Stewarts, etc.) but the Montblancs remain favorites. There are many pen collectors who will not buy a Montblanc due to the status, high price, or (some would say) vulnerable resin. But, as a writing instrument, Montblancs are still excellent.

Same for Rolex. There are many great watches, but Rolex has produced some watches throughout its history that are uniquely satisfying to own and wear.

The best thing about the Rolex is that it improves my sex appeal, attracts women to my front door, gets me promotions, continually raises my salary, takes me to exotic countries where I commute in ferraris, let's me kill spies, and let's me drink 25-year-old french cognac with world leaders.

The worst thing about a Rolex is waking up from a dream like the above, severely hungover from drinking too much PBR and passing out in some back alley with my Rolex missing along with my pants.

Life is short. How sad to have realized in your death bed that you've worn a crappy watch as a "daily beater" for most of your days.

I like the submarine hatch stem. Keeps the moisture out of the watch.

Datejust 36mm. There are few if any 36mm watches either high or low quality out there. This is the size I feel comfortable with.
Many watches are accurate but my D.J. 3135 cal is consistently accurate which means I don't need to monitor or mess with the adjustment.

Okay, just kidding. The best thing about this one is that it belonged to my dad first.
