The modification is quite simple and inexpensive:
- Obtain a replacement (service) Rolex crystal.
- Immerse it in acetone for a couple of days.
- Flip the "bubble" off with your thumbnail.
- Have a competent watchmaker swap the crystals and pressure test the watch.
- Retain the original crystal should you ever wish to do a factory restoration.
The total cost was less than $180. Now I have full view of the gorgeous black dial/white markers - plus the date is now legible at a glance:

This is my Rolex Certi (diamond/sapphire) face Submariner. I bought it new in 1998.
I just took this pic this week. 10 years old and still looks stunning.
