    Ambit and HR monitoring

    Hi everyone !
I have been following this Suunto forum very actively during the last couple of weeks even if I'm not posting much.

I'm really excited with the new Ambit and can't wait to get my hands on one, hopefully in April (I live in Montreal, CAN).

Now onto the topic, I will be going high in the mountains in 9 months (Aconcagua) and one of the many features I'm looking for in the ambit is the HR monitoring. My question : Can I get a live monitoring of my heart BPM without entering exercice mode (without recording data about location, time, altitude, temp, etc...) I would like to be able to know my Heart BPM during the night, high on the mountain for safety/health reasons, without using some precious memory space.

    thanks all !

Of course, you can go into exercise mode, you just don't hit the start button, shows your HR but doesn't use up any log space.

on the same topic : How long does the HR belt battery lasts ? Should be at least 30 days, like the basic ABC watch features.

    thx again !

To tell you the truth I have no idea, but they are a user replaceable battery, so you could carry a spare after some heavy use.

Good question, one I didn't know. I searched a little and only found one reference, that claims a Suunto Smartbelt HR belt battery should last about 300hr in best case. That's a different model than the one with the Ambit, which also records data internally. Maybe someone else knows.

I have a dual comfort belt that I am using with the Ambit. I replace batteries about twice a year and average 50h of exercise per month. So the HR batteries last a long time, they are user replaceable CR2032 batteries.

    Re: Ambit and HR monitoring

    Hi All
Im having an issue with the HR display on my Ambit. Based on Suunto Q&A's that the Ambit will work OK with Dual HR belt, I decided to use this belt from my Quest.

However, I keep loosing the HR value in the display when in exercise mode & it take fair bit of time for the values to re-appear, only for them to disappear again. There is no consistency to it, the values can be there for 10 mins, or I could lose or gain them 5 or 6 times in the next 10 mins.

Ive re-paired, installed new battery & washed the belt, all to no avail, plus the belt works flawlessly with my Quest.

Anyone else experienced any similar issues with the Dual HR belt?? or any advise on anything I may have missed, before I get onto Suunto?

    Many thanks
    Paul

Hi Paul: I am also using this belt bit with no issues. The dual comfort belt, correct? I have found that the elastic straps do wear out. If the strap is over a year old and you exercise a lot, the strap may be bad. I have no issues with mine, you can check my latest move on Moescount under user "bradolwin".

A second possibility is that the electrodes are too dry. Try an electrode gel, I get most of the strap wet befor I run. I also know that generation of static in wicking materials used in modern shirts can also interfere with HR, again the gel should solve this.

If neither of these works, I would test your Ambit with the new strap. Good luck.

My cycling buddies always laugh at me when I lick my hrm strap before putting it on lol.

No really, I do... but they do sell a gel that can be used for the contacts.

Dry electrodes have been a problem for me for years. I don't sweat easily and live in a dry climate. The gells work great but they can dry out too after a while. Light exertion or all day monitoring.
Wet and salty is the key!
