    Ambit vs iPhone

    Same route devices running concurrently.

FusedSpeed was active. 1 sec record for the Ambit and whatever the iPhone app does as default. 4.86km for Ambit and 4.92km for iPhone.

On the bottom graphs, which is the ambit, the one on the left?
Focus on what you want to happen, not what has happened.

Yes, with FusedSpeed active. As you can see on the graphs I walked up hills and ran on the flat & downhills.

I think Suunto need to ad some more filter to the GPS data, there are too many spikes. I interpret that being due to the 1m accuracy of the GPS, i.e. nothing you can do about that except smoothing it out.

Maybe there's an error in my thinking, but if a watch is worn on the wrist, and you're running, that said wrist moves and changes speed a lot more often than the body. Does the graph change, when you attach the watch to the body (just for the sake of science )?

    Re: Ambit vs iPhone

I don't think arm movement is such a big issue. Biggest problem is that (non-military)GPS is inherently not more accurate than 1m. So if you move 1m per second, have accuracy of one meter and 1s sampling rate you can get sample 1 and 2 anywhere between 0 and 2m apart, i.e. speed between 0 and 2x real speed (only taking into account the speed in the direction you move, you also have a sideways error where you can be 1m left in sample one and 1m right in sample 2). So all this then have to be smoothed out with filters to get reasonable numbers. But if you smooth too much you will not catch changes in pace buth then the Ambit has the fuesdspeed to help.

This being my first GPS watch I am not very impressed with the accuracy of plotting my movement on roads and trails on the map, i.e. ususally plotted a bit to the side. I think that this can also be made better with some updated algorithms.. (and it would not surprise me if Garmin is a bit better on GPS as they have a longer track record there). All in all I like the Ambit really much, would not trade it for a Garmin, but some things can be improved.

If you like to get better track and erase the transfer to the watch hand side try wearing it like this. Makes difference.

Here is a track comparison from yesterday, Suunto Ambit, Forerunner 305, Holux m-1200e, Globalsat BT-338x (on my cap! ;)

I wondered when we would see the first 'inside wrist' wearing person with the Ambit. The Ambit antenna placement seems to be designed for outside-the-wrist watch wearers.

Just provided that you recognize it's not flexible like the iPhone protect - and it's not a magnetic. It just flops around everywhere. That's the purpose why I ... pink rhinestone iphone 4 case
