core resetting and service by sunnto

    hello all.

I have a sunnto core. the yellow and black. I really enjoy the watch. i got it as a gift a couple years ago, and lately started having problems. i replaced the battery on 4/14 and then on the other day it was dead. So i went and got a new one, and it seemed to be fine. but same problems. the reason i swaped out the battey was because the watch seems to reset it self. randomly during the day, seems like it happeneds every other day. it will keep the date, but everthing elese needs to be reset.

so i have a couple of questions:

i its been a couple of years, do you think i will be charged by suunto? when i called suunto that was there only suggestion.

or is there something that i can do with out sending it to them?

    any other recomendations..

    thanks for any help.

Unhappy Re: core resetting and service by sunnto

i have the exact same watch, core yellow - black. got it like 6 months ago. i bought it second hand off some guy who told me the watch is in perfect working order and he was right, i had no problems with the watch until a like a week ago when it started resetting. now it's resetting like 2 times / day. it keeps the date but not the clock exactly like Ahrenv 's watch. i also replaced the battery but it keeps doing the same thing.

i noticed that it's reseting on it's own some times, but sometimes it seems like it's reseting if i press the buttons to fast.

    any idea on the probmem?

i'm so sad about the watch, i really really like it :(

Sounds like they probably have to go in for service.

Sounds like the original problems the Core first had when it was first released is back. Do a search for this and you will find many threads on the problem you are describing. Since you both already changed the battery, you need to send them back to Suunto.

To determine when your CORE was manufactured, look at the first three digits of the serial number.

First number is the last number of the year, and the second two numbers are the week of the year.

    For example:

    810XXXXX is 2008, 10th week.

    021XXXXX is 2010, 21st week.

Re: core resetting and service by sunnto

In the early days of the Core....
That was the same as earlier defect. Some crapped out in a few weeks some a few months and some never did. The resetting issue was a common issue with the Core when it was introduced. The earlier Cores were like ticking time bombs. Every one held their breath expecting their Core to fail. It was a mess. We all looked for reasons why it would fail. Some though static and others couldn't find a pattern. I believe Suunto admitted it was a way they manufactured the Core. They said they addressed it. This is the main reason "made in China" upsets so many Suunto Core owners. Only the Core was made in China and it had the most defects because of it.
The premium Suunto watches are made in Finland. They always have been. This is why it is advertised "Made in Finland" with the release of the Ambit. There was no way Suunto was going to go through the Core fiascos with the Ambit.
It is/was a huge epic mistake for Suunto to use Chineese manufacturing with the Core. Suunto advertised the Core as "Designed in Finland, Made in China".

The bright side is Suunto stands behind their product and would replace all defects. There have been forum members have their same Core replace 3 times in a row from defects in the early days. There were so many Core warranty claims, Suunto was back ordered for months at a time. Imagine having your new watch crap out and then having to wait months to get it replaced because there was so many defects being replaced... It drove a lot of Suunto customers away very frustrated. Every other day there were hate threads to Suunto on the forum. It was Suunto damage control in high gear. We all wondered how much money Suunto really did save by manufacturing in China??? It still could be a reason why the Suunto Core has not been changed internally for so long. Perhaps Suunto is still recouping the money from the Cores earlier failures and needs to have the watch out their making money before they will update its features????
This is a big reason why you must believe in the Suunto as a company and their excellent reputation.

Indeed. Almost everyone on WUS has talked about the exceptional customer service Suunto has provided them.

I've only this week sent my Core back to Suunto - the bottom right sticky button finally became a non-functioning button (think I've mentioned it on WUS last year). It's years over the warranty, but I'm hoping they'll see me right, finger's crossed.

Re: core resetting and service by sunnto

Just a few nit-picks... Its not ONLY the Core that is manufactured in China... some of the T series were/are as well.

And its not only the PREMIUM models made in Finland... the venerable And basic Vector is and always has been made in Finland... although personally I kind of think the Vector is premium anyway LOL.

In my opinion there were two things at play. I PERSONALLY think the first Cores were rushed to market. Now, this is just my opinion but if you think WAY back to the release of the Core it was in October I think. Just in time for the holiday shopping season. I think they wanted the new gadget out there for the holidays. Second I heard, and I dont know if this is true, that the original manufacturing was done kind of "hands off". the design was given to a Chinese manufacturing facility and they started making them. Once all the issues cropped up, they started putting folks from Finland in the manufacturing facility as QAQC positions and then things got better. We see very few issues with modern Cores.

I think Chinese manufacturing can be done right, but a company must take care to do it right. But I must admit... I prefer they were all made in Finland.
