    Question I'M A SUUNTO VIRGIN! :0

I'm a big g-shock guy, own a lot of them. If I were to try and come over to this side, what would be a good starter suunto? Keep in mind, I have a weakness for negative displays. Also, If anyone wants to tell me the benefits of Suunto's over G-Shocks, I would love to hear!!
    Thanks.

I have dozens of G Shocks. You wont find a tougher watch. Suuntos are more "instrument oriented". The technology in terms of ABC field use is just about unmatched. They are in no way 'tender' but they will not be built like a G... what watch is? :)

You can get a Vector for under 200.00 or an ambit for much more :)

Check out the Vectors, X Landers and Cores. They are the most popular. Vectors are the most "basic". The same guts are in X Landers... The Cores are a big step up in technology but they all have the same features... so it comes to taste/budget/need.

thanks for the info, I've heard of the ambit, I hear that's a pretty in demand for Suunto right now, am I correct? I'll check out the other models you suggested. Just one thing, what do you mean when you said that Suunto's are more 'instrument oriented"??
    Thanks.

Let me put it this way... People often compare Suunto vs Casio (protreks). I like the phrase that Suuntos are AWESOME field instruments with a watch. Casios are awesome watches with ABC functions. :)

Now there really isnt as direct a comparison with a G. First, No G has ABC functions. The Riseman and the new Gulfman are close. But not true ABCs. And if you are judging on build toughness there is no watch out there that compares with a G in my opinion.

So think Subaru outback (Suunto) vs Ford 150 (G Shock)

Ha, great comparison Jeff. If your after an ABC watch the Core is a great instrument. The Ambit seems to favour those who are active and want to track their activities. The core is a great outdoors watch. Simple, clean and precise. I have two and love them both. You can't go wrong!!

P.S. Always wanted to own a Ford 250/350 (big honking Yank Tank), but do like the style and functionality of the Subaru!!

The Core is the ABC you want to start with but the Ambit is the top of the line GPS watch it's in it's own league. The ambit also has the latest and best ABC sensors. The Ambit is the iPhone of watches. Very technical, programmable and advanced in every way. The Core is a stand alone watch. The display on the Ambit will blow everything else away. If money is tight, get the Core it's a great performer but if you want the best of the best then the Ambit is the clear choice.

The core also has a depth profile turning it into an effective depth meter to 100 feet.

This is my 2nd suunto, the 1st an X9i. I come from long Casio lineage also. Before this core on my arm, a Casio paw1200 was strapped there for 5 years- 24/7 (I like watches that don't have to be taken off :). Before that many various other casios, mostly g's and databanks.
