    Question X10 & Ambit........

Question here guys...i don't really need a gps watch, but i think they are pretty damn cool. I noticed that the x10 still costs more than the Ambit on Suunto.com. Is there any specific reason why? I thought that the release of the Ambit would possibly lower the price of the X10. The X10 is almost $100 more. Any input??

The X10 has some navigation capabilities that aren't available on the Ambit yet. The Ambit has better waypoint sync'ing with movescount... I dunno, maybe they'll lower the X10 price? You can pick up a used / like new X10 on Ebay for around the Ambit price as well.

Go for the Ambit! Won't regret it
Heard that the X10 has quite a lot of issues regarding the beezle and coating... Battery life is far less than the Ambit. Ambit is upgradeable, X10 isn't. Production of X10 has stopped for what I have been told so more future for the Ambit I reckon...
Ambit has quite a lot of personalisation options.
I could go on for a while but read the review @Mystro posted on the forum... Says it all... ;)

I think it's so that spending $550 for a watch can seem like a good deal.

That and competitive research and a careful study of Price Elasticity (aka how many Jeff_C's wouldn't buy the watch vs how many Mystros would)

    Re: X10 & Ambit........

I have both watches. The ambit simply works.

The gps on the x10 can take over 10 minutes to sync up even if it's in the same location from a previous sync. The gps on the ambit is almost instantaneous in the same situation. The x10 does have some nice navigation features but they are not intuitive. I'm hoping that the ambit will have many upgrades in the future and it seems like it is possible. The x10 does sync the time to GPS.

The original x10 would get a broken bezel, guaranteed, although suunto replaced my entire unit under warranty. The x10 has three alarms which I like but the ambit has snooze which is cool too. Ambit is much louder. The ambit is extremely comfortable. I can actually fall asleep with it on without loosing circulation in my hand. The buttons on the ambit are the best watch buttons I've ever used.

    What else?

yeah IF I wanted a GPS watch, Im afraid there is no comparison to the Ambit for me. The gps signal reception (from what i read) is head and shoulders above the X10.

My X9 was a bust. I could start it, watch a movie, walk the dogs, go for a ride and then maybe have link up. LOL... (Not that bad... but yeah).

I think it's nothing more complicated than Suunto do not want to sell any more X10's. Leaving the price high streers the buyer to the AMBIT which is the unit Suunto would prefer to sell.

For those who want/need the specialized features of the X10, e.g. the red backlight on the X10M, the limited remaining stock will be used to fill those orders.

One could also argue that keeping the MSRP high on the X10 helps maintain brand image.

    Re: X10 & Ambit........

It's probably not that at all.... It's more likely that they have not updated the webpage. They might have some x-10s still in circulation ( or on the shelves of retailers) and they don't want to undercut the value of the X10 still on the market by dropping the price. Suunto will keep the X10 at its original MSRP for, say, a season or so, and then discontinue the watch. Retailers will be able to discount their pricing on X10 stock, so that they get SOMETHING for their investment, and phase in the Ambit at the lower price point.

$650 was simply too expensive for a GPS watch, and $500 seems to be a better price point. They sell a ton more units even though they make less per unit (assuming that the production costs are the same- which is doubtful)

    Re: X10 & Ambit........

Found a nice Google earth kmz/kml to suunto sdf converter thats free, if anyone needs it.

Here's the link: Download GE2Suunto2GE 1.0 Free - KML to SDF made easy - Softpedia

ps: dunno if it works with Ambit - it should, if Ambit also uses .sdf files. Works great on my X10. Can also convert from sdf back to kmz/kml.

2nd ps: my first post here, nice forum :)
