U2: 4.6 mm slightly domed sapphire crystal.

UX: ? mm but definitely flat
filled with clear silicon oil

I was wondering if anyone would notice. Due to my current pre-occupation with my new UX, my U2 ran down. I quickly set the time and gave it a wind but couldn't be bothered with the date for the pic comparo. Good eye man, good eye!! :-D :-D

That is a great viewing angle comparison between the U2 and UX. The larger viewing angle of the UX over the U2 has lot more to do with the optical refraction of flat vs. convex (domed) crystals of the two watches, than it does the silicone oil versus air filling. That said the index of refraction matching between the saphire crsystal and the silicone oil does have a positive affect on viewing angle as well. With index matching there is almost zero refraction of the light as in travels across the oil to crystal boundary.

The flat crystal of U1 will perform much better than the U2 at large viewing angles. And the flat crystal combined with the index matching silicone oil of the UX will improve it's viewing angle slightly over the air filled U1.

I have owned several flat sapphire crystal watches and your right, the viewing angles are increased for sure! The domed, because of the nature of the refraction of light will obscure the viewing for a significant portion of the viewing angles as your angle approaches the 0 degree orientation.

I regards to the flat vs flat with silicon oil filling, the silicon performs an optical illusion bringing the whole dial up so it looks just like it's imbedded in or painted on the crystal. At super extreme angles approaching 0 degrees, virtually all of the dial is visible as well as the time clearly discernable.

In my opinion, in regards to visibility at angles, the silicon oil filling allows more extreme viewing angles by bringing the dial up to a virtual on top of the crystal appearance. That's not saying that the U1 is bad, it's great. Alot has to do with the depth of the dial too, and the thickness of the crystal.

I wish I had a U1 to test, anyone out there with the UX and U1, how 'bout a viewing angle pictorial?

I'll see if I can put together another set-up with my other flat crystal watches.

The big thing to me about the U2/UX comparison, is the blackness of the dial on the UX. Like magic felt marker vs leaded pencil.
