Prometheus Recon 5 Company Information:

The Prometheus Recon 5 Swiss Made Flieger Men's Watch comes with free shipping worldwide and continues the evolution of the flieger/pilot watches.

The first flieger watches appeared during the Second World War and were produced by five brands: IWC, Stowa, Wempe, Laco and Lange & Söhne.

Having as a starting point those traditional flieger designs Prometheus Watch Company brought to life a evolution of the flieger watch with the birth of the Recon 5 Swiss Made Flieger Men's Watch marked by it's clear and simplistic lines.

This Swiss Made mechanical men's flieger watch is powered by an ETA Unitas 6497-1 with côtes de genève finish and is made in the Swiss Jura mountains in order to assure absolute performance.

With the Recon 5 you have now the chance to own such an exclusive time piece.

With its engineering design look and appeal the Recon 5 is a pure man watch with a price and quality that make it one of the best watch buys. There are many on line watches available in market but very few with such an exclusive pedigree.

You can purchase the Prometheus Recon 5 at the watch shop .

First Impression:

I was very impressed when I opened the box and first laid eyes on this watch. The dial is clean and easy to read. The hands are large and prominent. No day or date, but that is not a 'must have' for me. I like the small seconds sub-dial and the fact that the sub-dial was lumed. The feel of the watch was perfect. The band first appeared a bit thin and I feared too short for my 8.25 wrist but once I put it on the thickness was just right and the fit was good for me. If you have a wrist larger then 8.25 you might have an issue tucking in the end of the strap in the keeper.

The Packaging and Watch Box:

The watch was sent via FedEx International shipping and came in a few days after shipping.

Outer wrapped box to prevent it from opening during shipment.

Leatherette box with stamped company name and logo

Warranty and instruction booklet included in box.

Extra bubble wrap to prevent watch from moving during transit.

.....and the watch itself!

Case measurement using a digital caliper:

(stock photo)

Case - crown side: Non-screw down crown which is typical of this style of pilots watch. The crown is a knurled crown and is a nice size based on the case size. The case itself is rather nondescript, but typical of this style pilots watch.

This picture gives you a good look at the thickness of the strap.

Non-crown side:
Note the screws used to attach the strap to the case. This side of the case is plain with no markings of any kind. I think this is appropriate and consistent with the aviator style the watch was designed to represent.

Dial and Hands:
Sorry about the lint at the 12 position. The hands are prominent and about 2/3 of the hands are lumed for maximum viability. The sub-dial is nicely lumed and the second hand matches the hour and minute hand in terms of both design and lume.

Buckle:
PWC stamped on the buckle. Note the double keeper.

Case back:
Sapphire crystal on the caseback and the nicely decorated Côtes de Genève 6497-1 movement in full view. Really a beautiful thing to look at and I think you will be taking this watch off your wrist frequently to show this off or just to gaze at it.

LUME shot:

Mine:
Average lume. Nice touch on the sub-dial with the lumed dial and hand.

Side-by-side Comparisons:

In these pictures you can see the nice fold-over strap and stitching. This is a very nice quality leather strap that is a bit on the thin side. I like this design compared to the rivets you see on some aviator watch straps. Below you can see it next to a thicker strap on the Custom build watch.
CurrentTime Custom Build

The measurements of the Custom Build are: 46.4mm case diameter and 51.8mm including the crown.

Glycine Incursore

The measurements of the Glycine Incursore are: 46.0mm case diameter and 50.3mm including the crown.

Movement:
ETA Unitas 6497-1 with Côtes de Genève

Côtes de Genève: A decoration consisting of undulating lines, reminiscent of waves and frequently used to embellish superior quality movements.
Standard power reserve is 46 hours. Non-hackable. Published specs are +/- 15 sec/day.

I timed mine for a few days against the atomic clock, in a very unscientific test my watch is running about +4 sec. a day.

Summary:

I am a pilot watch fan! I own several, including the three you see here. I also own a Citizen Skyhawk that I classify as a flight computer because of the number of complications and the fancy bezel on it. I prefer the clean, easy to read dials offered by the Recon 5, an old fashioned flieger style pilot or aviators watch. I like the larger faces, that are unobstructed by the large bezels of a diver. I like the classic, but updated, looks that these modern flieger pilot's watches offer. The Recon 5 meets all these parameters and more. It is Swiss made and uses a tried and true movement. It has the added charm of being a hand cranker (needs to be hand wound). It has many of the upgraded features, (ie., sapphire crystals, nice lume hands and sub-dial) that most of us watch enthusiasts like to see in a watch.

Prometheus also pays attention to the smaller details. The case is screwed to the strap and fits nicely so that there is not large space between the strap and the case. The buckle is stamped with the initials of the company (PWC). The high quality leather strap is soft and buttery, if not a bit thin. What more you could ask for in a watch? There are lots of pilot's/aviator watches on the market. When you are considering your next purchase, do your self a favor and consider the Recon 5. You will find it very difficult to find another pilot's watch that has this quality at this price point. Then there is the customer service of Prometheus that just makes a purchase of this type all the better because you can buy with confidence.

Pros:

Classic style in a Swiss Made watch. Simple, clean dial. No fancy complications. Good lume.

Based on my experience with both the Recon 5 and the Jellyfish I own, I give high marks to Prometheus for quality, fit and customer service.

Cons:

The strap is on the second to last hole on my 8.25 wrist and just fits in the first keeper. If your wrist is larger then mine you may not be able to tuck it in the keeper.

The strap is a bit thinner then I would like.

No day or date.
