Pretty Sure I Got A Fake Carrera On Ebay

The seller (from Romania) has a lot of positive feedback in their history so I went ahead with the purchase of the watch shown above.

After I received the watch I started looking around to see how you can tell a replica from the real thing, and I came across several sites that say a Tag's with the serial number LY3487 are fakes. Sure enough that's what my serial number is. Additionally, the watch I got says CV2014 not CV2010 as described in the eBay listing. I've contacted the seller requesting a refund and their response:

    "Dear friend
You tell a watch is original or not by the mechanism it has, the mechanism your watch has is an ETA VALJOUX SWISS MOVEMENT with all the functions (crhromigragh ,thachymetre etc) provided by the manufacturer. A fake one does not have these mechanism because is very expensive only the mechanism is around 1400$. So please go to the expert, a specialist in watches, or watch mechanic how has solid information about watches and he will confirm that thw watch is authentic. The more important at the watch is the mechanism not a serial no wich is very easy to encrave the model cv2010 comes from cv2014 tag heuer change the stap in order to make it look luxury, the people on the forums does not know nothing aboyt watches and it's imposible for a fake watch to has all the function that authentic watch has, so please go to a specialist i will pay the amount that the expert of watches will charge you to examine the watch.
    Many Thanks"

Any thoughts on the seller's reply? I'm curious as to why they did not address the serial number.

Thanks in advance for all responses!

Re: Pretty Sure I Got A Fake Carrera On Ebay

the carrera fakes are getting harder to spot tells. The watch above does look authentic but I'm guessing this is a stock photo and not a photo of the watch you received.

To date, the best way to tell is the geneva striping on the rotor. It should have a stripe down the center of the rotor. Most of the fakes being sold from asia and eastern Europe have an even # of stripes vs. an odd # of stripes.

See this thread for more info and pics.

Also, the CV2010 and CV2014 are two very different watches, not just a difference in straps. The dials are completely different along with the hands. The CV2014 uses red hands. First, I would compare your watch to the pictures on the Tag Heuer website comparing your CV2014 to pics of the real CV2014.

Will your local AD be able to verify that?

First off, you're right, LY3487 is definately a fake. But there's other tells too. The watch in the picture is a CV2010. The CV2014 has red chrono seconds hand, as well as red hands on the 12 and 6 o'clock subdials. The 2 rings around the subdials are a lot thinner and there's 60, 15, 30, 45 numerical markers on the 9 o'clock running seconds subdial on the CV2014. If you got the watch in the picture but with model #CV2014, you can confront the seller that it's a fake much easier than with the serial #. TAG Heuer doesn't mark model #'s wrong on the watch. Here's a picture of an actual CV2014.

If your watch doesn't look like that, it's a fake. Good luck with getting your money back.

If you need proof, try registering your watch at http://www.tagheuerregistration.com/...ation.register

If it doesn't work, you can print that out and use it against the seller.

I have a Shanghai 3LZF2 which is pretty much a clone of the Valjoux 7750. It is in my Prometheus and the whole watch and movement did not cost $1400. There are a number of Chinese makers of 7750 lookalikes... some are very cheap but others, like the Shanghai, are darn good. They are not expensive. This vendor is feeding you a line of what comes out of the south end of a north facing bull.

Yes, my auction link is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250620101408

I've requested a refund from the seller, which I'm 99.99% certain I won't get, but I should get my money back from either eBay Buyer Protection or AMEX.

Thank you to everyone for the replies.

It's obvious. How can a Carrera CV2014 be 50m water resistant?

The original CV2014, CV2014-0 and CV2014-1 were 50m. The latest CV2014-2 was upgraded to 100m.
