    Question about Automatics?

    Greetings TH fans,

I am a first time TH owner of an Aquaracer Calibre 5 300m WAN2110. I posted a pic of it here: The Aquaracer - 2000 Club - Page 7

I've never owned a swiss auto before and I'm wondering what is considered 'normal' for automatics in terms of time-keeping. I've set mine to an atomic clock online and as you can imagine I check frequently. I've only had the watch 2 days now and it seems to be gaining about 2-7 seconds/day. That is probably reasonable but I've also noticed that at different times of the day it might be +2 then later +7 then later again maybe +2. Is that normal?

I'm also wondering what is recommended for night time. Do most people sleep with theirs or remove them and if so, is it better to lay the watch down dial up, crown up or crown down?

    Appreciate any tips...

I would say that most automatics generally gain or lose up to 10secs in 24 hours. What I would do is wear it all day and then when I you go to bed place it a certain way either crown up or down face up or down and so on and write down how much time it gains or loses and then when you are wearing check and see how much time it gains or loses and then if it gains 4secs when you are wearing it then find a position when you are not wearing it that loses 4secs and you will not have to set it very often. You might not find that it varies much in different positions either if that's the case then just set it a few minutes fast or slow depending on how it runs and you won't have to set it as often. I did this with my Rolex and I hardly ever had to set it once you learn how it runs. Also you said you just got it if you mail ordered it it might have to settle down a bit so give it a little while before you get to involved and see if it settles down a bit.

Thanks Caneman...looks like I'm going to have to keep a Diary. I bought it from a local AD so no, it wasn't mail ordered.

No problem, just don't check it so often just check it at the same time everyday it won't be as frustrating.

When the novelty wears off you will stop checking against the atomic clock.
Don't wase time with a diary, you will drive yourself insane checking and checking.
    tpd80 and PrasadD like this.
In my collection I have a number of watches.
Bought a few, flipped a few.

You're probably right about the diary but I can't help myself checking the atomic clock. It still seems to be gaining but at least its keeping better time then my notebook clock. :)

    Hello Stryker,
the TAG Calibre 5 loses a few seconds over night if you lay the watch dial up.
I own an Aquaracer 500M with a Sellita SW200 movement which gains 4 seconds a day. Putting it on a winder seems to speed it up a little..

I don't have a winder. I've always worn my watches (quartz) at night and haven't decided what to do yet with this one since its my first mechanical watch. I haven't determined if its taboo or not to do so.
