    Auxiliary Power Unit.
It's a small jet engine, that drives one or two generators, and produces pneumatic pressure. It can fully power the aircraft when the engines are not running, during a ground stop. It can also serve as a back-up source of power in case of a failure of one of the electric or pneumatic systems in flight.

It would appear that the back edge of the engine pylon has been painted red for some reason, as have the tips of the flap hinge fairings.

Or, replaced parts that haven't been painted white.

One of the main causes of damage to aircraft is vehicles moving on the platform. And there are many of those around an aircraft during a turnaround. My guess is that it's painted red, to contrast with the white wing, and make it stand out so that it doesn't get hit incidentally.

Apologies for my ignorance - what is that, please?

Ron, those photos are good enough for the cover of the KLM Annual Report...

    Aloha Ron,

You should submit them -- they would make a spectacular cover for the annual financial report.

    Mahalo,

    andy
