    Picture USS Hornet CV-12 Museum

Last week end i went th the USS Hornet CV-12 Museum in Alameda CA. here are some photo's.

This was the carrier that recovered Apollo11 the first moon landing and Apollo 12.

My Dad was a crew member on this type aircraft the Avenger TBM I took him to this museum when he came down from Montana and he told me he flew off the Hornet.

Hope you like the photo's here is a little history on the USS Hornet CV-12 it took 16 months to build, went into service on Nov 29,1943,durring WW2 it did not tie up to a pier in 15 months that would of been tuff, attacked 59 times she was never hit thats luck,Hornet pilot shot down 62 enemy aircraft in one day the great Mariannas turkey shoot and 255 in a month, ten pilots made ace in a day.It also served in the Vietnam war.A lot of history in this old ship.

Very nice! Thanks for posting the photos and the history tidbits.

For those of us not able to see it in the flesh, this is a real treat!

    John

EDIT : One question, are those capsules real? In the photos, they look like mock ups, but the top of the Apollo CM makes me question that.

I think you are right about it being a mock up might of been used for trainning?

    Re: USS Hornet CV-12 Museum

    Great thread river rat, thanks...

I had the pleasure of visiting the old girl last year. It was a fantastic few hours walking the decks of the Hornet. On a previous US trip 2 yrs earlier I visited the Battleships USS North Carolina in NC, the USS Massachusetts in Fall Creek Mass & the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbour Hawaii. Awesone history in all that steel...

Being the second WW2 aircraft carrier named Hornet she had much to live up to, considering the attention the original Hornet CV-8 received as the carrier that launched the B-25 bombers in the Doolittle raids over Tokyo in 1942. A shame at least one of these old WW2 carriers that are left as museums wasn't left in their original WW2 configuration.

    Thanks again RR.....
