Confused What is shock proofing to the balance

    shock proofing on the balance

    Hi all

Yes, I am so new..hehe, so I am really asking some stupid questions here....but, hope some will help me....I know that modern watches got some kinf of shock proofing the movement. Making it more strong, to dropps, soft knocks and that.

But, what is it really? How do I find out?
Say I am in a shop, looking at a nice vintage,, opening it, and looking at the movement...what do I look for? To se the shock proofing?

When I was in the shop 2 day´s ago, looking at the movement, I did feel like the first time looking at a engine in a car........:oops:, NOT understand it all...And not knowing what to ask and to look for.

I did try to ask the lady in the shop, but I think she also had no idea what I was asking about.

Now I am adult, well so my id say, so it is ok to ask and lett you all know what I know and don´t.

Hope I can get some help.

    Cheers all

    Is shock proofing necessary?

No, it is not. There are many watches and pocket watches still in existance that work fine.

That said, if you drop your watch onto a hard floor, the shock proofing may save it where the lack of such may make it a lost cause.

I am not tryng to scare you Vegard_dino. I wear several older watches. You just need to know what you are dealing with.

    Cheers!
