Well this is a design that I have created. Obviously from the markings I would love for it to be a Steinhart. I initially brought this up with Riker but failed to update the images to him so I decided I'd give it to a larger audience to see how it would be received.

The face of the watch would have to be a very dark midnight Blue. Where the stars are there would be an appropriate hole punched out of the face. Underneath the face would be an entire lume dial so that it would create the illusion of depth while also providing lume for all the stars and comets. The hour hand is the north star. The minute had is the crescent moon and since i have various designs of the watch the crescent would either "cup" the numbers its on or sit lower on the hand and "cup" the north star as it passed it. The seconds hand would be the green comet with it's tail burning off and would have to be lumed and painted with great detail. The number font is definitely up for deliberation. I also threw an additional crown on the left side, considered having the full lumed dial underneath to be able to rotate to change the color of lume for some stars....just an idea.

As I told Riker I don't believe a watch designed like this has ever been attempted and if it's done correctly the watch would only generate "wow's". If it could be described in one word it would have to be Mesmerizing.

Any comments, suggestions, criticisms are definitely welcomed.

Also, if anyone would like to create this in photoshop, feel free by all means.

Nice idea. I would suggest to identify a PARTICULAR "slice" of the night-sky (for example a costellation, and name the watch with its name, e.g. URSA MAJOR) to reproduce on the dial.

A problem could be the weight of the minutes hand: the "half moon" should me similar to the "half moon" used on the "pointer calendar" to keep the hand's balance during the rotation.

Seconds hand also needs its proper counterweight on the rear part (it should be a star, I suppose).

Enjoy the development of your project... ;)
    Ciao!

I know I'd love to see some clean silver/white dial dress watches... and more chronograph options. I think even a white dial Ocean 2 could be interesting.

    Second the dressy option!
White faced with blue hands with a good mix of brushed and polished surfaces on the case. Preferably 42mm or so since dressy watches tend to be smaller.

While we're at that, is it possible to venture into power reserve indicators too?

Well the lume dial would be a disk that has different colored lume splattered all over it. Various white, blue, green?, maybe red? and some parts blacked out. So that when you rotate it underneath the main dial it exposes certain parts of the lume dial through the mini star/galaxy holes. So in essence you can change what parts of the sky you're looking at.

    Think this:

And as far as the addition to the line-up. That is what I was thinking as well. Maybe because it's my design, but I think that if this watch were to make it to production, it would put Steinhart on the map. Now this is just my opinion obviously, but because this design has never been made before it would make people do a double-take.

...the colured dial could be connected to the date wheel and then colours could appear during the hours of evening and night... ;)

Oh the date wheel would be a part of the colored wheel.....great idea! I was disappointed because I realized maybe a date feature wouldn't work. But you just put them together!

And the hands of the watch wouldn't be too heavy. The crescent should sit a lot lower on the hand, its more aesthetically appealing. Plus, my World Traveler's hands are pretty big.
