    Definition of "affordable"

    How do you define "affordable"?

    By price range? By brand?

I'm trying to find the proper forum for asking questions about watches I'm considering.

(I know "affordable" is a relative term. Bill Gates' definition of "affordable" is vastly different from mine.)

To me, it's how much I can spend while still making my mortgage payment, school payments, electric, sewer, water, insurance, cars etc. Then I add 10%

Seriously though, it's whatever you feel you can afford. For some, that means an Omega, others a Citizen.

    Cheers,

You answered it, Seth...it's all relative. If you really have an afternoon or two to kill, just use the search function and then read all of the threads trying to discern/define what "affordable" means.

Yes, "affordables watches" is the place to talk about Invicta, Timex, Orient, etc., and even the $15 find at the thrift store, but questions, comments, praises and zings are also welcome for Rolex, etc. Same w/ the "public" forum as well.

    Re: Definition of "affordable"

This subject gets thrashed out about every six weeks...is it time again already?

IMHO, affordable means a price within the amount of money you have aside from your household budget....ie. the amount you can spend and really not feel. If you have to save for a few months, deny yourself things you normally purchase, feel a twinge when you think of the bills waiting at home...that watch isn't really affordable.

And yes, it's a subjective thing...obviously there are people here who could buy what I regard as a 'high-end watch' every month, and more power to them. However there are separate forums for the Rolex and Panerai and even the Oris guys, so I think it's reasonable to believe that the Affordable forum is setting its sights a little lower than that. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of watches costing more than about $1000 discussed here...but if you got a used $1100 watch for $650, well....

Hamilton Khaki Officer 44mm Unitas w/custom hands and lume
    Volmax Aviator 45mm handwinder
    Laco 42mm B-Type Flieger

    Wish List:

I guess I'll just start here with my questions, and trust the moderators to move my posts as they see fit.

Well, here is your first mistake at WUS...trusting a tyro like me w/ only 80 posts to his name.

Seriously though, as Steve mentioned above, there are many brand specific forums such as Rolex and Panerai where you might get a better answer to a specific question about that brand or model, but many questions may cross boundries, as when considering if/when/why to spend more and move "up" to a higher tier watch, etc.

I like this Forum because of the variation in what is 'affordable'. That means you get opinions on everything from the highest price to the lowest. Take a look at my signature and you will see what I mean.

Of course you have to know how I feel about money. "I am spending my children's inheritence". At age 67 I am having a ball!!

In the words of my favorite philosipher - Willie Nelson "I hope when I die I am over 90, owe $100,000 and shot by a jealous husband".

    Seth,

Dont too caught up in the category or trying to figure out too much here. At least on the affordable forum we cut a lot of slack to most everyone and arent too particular about discussing just about any watch.

After a few weeks here bopping about you will sort of get a better idea where you might want to post what and for whatever reason you may feel it is approriate or not. I dont think most of us really "police" much of the posts here as long as you use a little bit of courtesy and it is somewhat watch related.

By price. Never over a 1000 dollars. Rarely reaching 600. 300-400 sometimes but 300 or less for the most part.

I'm all for the "if you can afford to spend it buy it" so it must be affordable ideal but he already mentioned that.
