I'm somewhat dissapointed with Pro Trek's build quality

A few days ago I finally had the chance tho examine several Pro Trek models from Casio in the flesh. To cut the story short, the bracelet on the titanium model (PRG-110T) was flimsy and appeared not to be very well made. The case was not that great either, the plastic felt too thin. The Giez model sitting next to them appeared to be more solidly built (yeah I know that the case is made of metal). It's rare in my experience that a watch looks worse in the flesh and it's unfortunate because I think Pro Treks looks great.

Is it just me or Pro Treks are indeed somewhat "flimsy"?

Depending on the models. For instance, I couldn't get past the flimsy buttons of the PRG-240, they just didn't felt right when pressed (like on a cheap no-name keyboard or remote control). There where some other shortcomings which caused me to send the watch back but rather not because of build quality. The PRG80 for instance is one solid made model (probably THE most rugged Protrek to date), which I don't find flimsy in any aspect, other than the usual Casio shortcomings in their ABC line.

If you are looking for maximum toughness, why not buy a G-Shock? There is no model with a fully featured ABC module but you can have one with either a compass (G-9300 mudman) or with altimeter and barometer (GW-9200 riseman). Both models should do the trick with the mudman certainly bigger and a little more rugged than the riseman.

    cheers

A short Tutorial on „How to use and calibrate a Casio Altimeter“:

    1. Attach a string to your Casio AB(C) watch (feel free to use any length)
    2. Abseil the watch into an Abyss until you hold the string’s end between your fingers
    3. Get the watch up again
    4. Use a measuring tape to measure the string length
    5. Success! Now you have carefully calibrated the Altimeter
    6. Important!!! The Altimeter Lock will stay enabled, unless you shorten or lengthen the string

I tend to agree with Cal here it does depend a little on the model.

For instance, my PRW-5000T has superb build, fit and finish. So does my PRW-1500.

My PRG-240T just feels a litte less substantial in general.

IMO the Riseman has no better build quality than the Protreks I handled so far (PRW-1200 and PAW-500T). If you don't need the compass I think the PAW/PRW-500 is great (don't confuse with the ana-digi PAW/PRW-5000). The titanium bracelet was not great so I changed it and put some adapters on and a Nato strap - the display still amazes me when compared to other Casios or G-Shocks - just very easy to read with big and bold digits and a great contrast:

it's one of the smaller models and it looks like it's discontinued unfortunately:

How about this model: PRG-80T/YT? I got my PRG-80-1 long time ago and it still survived.

strange enough, i found the Ti bracelet on PAW1300T (should basically be a atomic version of PRG-110T) to be excellent built.

Full solid links with pin and collar, nice clasps with the push buttons covered by the flap. I like it a lot and thought it was the best Ti bracelet at that price point.

On the other hand, the Ti bracelel on PAG240T was a little too noisy for me with the folded links and thin metals at the clasps.

But anyway, to the OP, are you sure you are not talking about the "lightness" of titanium? which some people said feels plasticy due to the lack of weight?

Sorry for the late reply, I forgot about this thread!

If I have the chance, I'll check PRG-80 but actually the slim models are the ones that attract me.

BTW where do you find Suntoo ABCs build quality lie? Above or below Casio's?

Actually I'm not looking for maximum toughness, I just like the look and display style (big centered numbers) of Pro Treks. Although there are some G-Shock models that I find attractive like Giez and G-7700.

The weight of the titanium could influence my perception but somehow I doubt it because I rarely wear watches with bracelets....

Its strange that i ve read many comments that quite disagree about the prg240 quality.

    Others like it, others not.

Me personal, saw it real life and liked it a lot.

Ofcourse you get what you pay (not always though)

Just the same thing I was thinking. This watch is on my wrist every day in the last 1,5 year and has seen pretty mountains and diving places .Looks and works excellent, the battery is always on "H" .The digits are among the biggest i ve seen -0,7cm .When I going for trekking my friends see the hours at least 2 meters, which talks for brightness sounds like joke SORRY for my English
