    Kingston - Questions about Dials

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Kingston (and MKII in general). I have a few specific questions and searched under "Kingston..." and the abundance of information that came back made my head spin.

After over an hour of reading while waiting for the family to wake up to have Christmas pancake, I decided to just post a question in hopes that the helpful folks here can answer.

I don't understand the terms used in describing the dial options:
    1. The word Gilt means "gold," but on the Kingston does it also mean a shiny dial?
    2. Does a dial that come with the gold accent automatically come with a shiny dial, or does it also come with a matte dial?
    3. Does a matte dial come only with silver hands?

I know I'm asking the same questions but I can't organize the thoughts in my head due to too much eggnog.

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Best,
    Johnny

    Hi Johnny,

    - The Kingston's gilt dial is only available in gloss finish, date or no date.
    - Matte dials with white indices only come with silver hands.

    Cheers!

Ok, this is moving my understanding in the eight direction. The gilt dial is definitely with gold hands -- or the gold hands come only with the gilt dial?

Thanks, the options have confused me.

    Hi,
To answer your last question, gold hands /gilt dial (glossy) , Silver hands/matte dial w/ white indices are the two configurations. However, to further confuse you, the first 100 watches came with what was designated "plank" kits which consisted of a second bracelet, case, bezel, dial and hands. So if a plank owner got a gilt dial/gilt hands on the watch, and a second matte dial and silver hands, he could if he so chose,(and knew a good watchmaker) exchange the hands, dials to make other combinations i.e. matte dial w/ white indices and gilt hands. or gilt dial w/ silver hands. I cannot imagine anyone doing this, becauser those combinations would not look very good at all.

You will see watches coming up for sale on the secondary market pretty frequently. the price is falling some so there could very well be some quite reasonable deals around. You may ghave to accept a different dial/lume/hands configuration than what you really want, but I would bet if you were patient, you can find just what you are looking for. There are still well over one hundred watches not delivered, and if past history is any indicator, a fair number of those will hit the secondary market.

    Thank you for the information.

That clears things up a little! So that I'm clear on this: The order from MKII had two primary options (gold-hands/gilt & glossy-dial, and silver-hands/white-indices/matte-dial), from which several configurations can be made after purchase?

Arthur, I just bought one that was listed on the WUS sales forum.

MKII Kingston Date dial Plank Kit

It appears to have the date window, gold hands and gold indices. I was primarily making sure that the dial is glossy. For some reason, the glossy dial elevates my heart rate, dilates my pupils, and makes me short of breath. The only drawback is that the same dial makes me have to change my shorts.

    Thanks,

This sir, is a very fine purchase! You will not regret it! Two tips: leave the bracelet untouched and get yourself a Hadley Roma tapered oyster. Works perfectly with the original endlinks. And/or get yourself a proper nato from ebay seller 'Watch Barn' Oil Tan Leather Bands, Rubber Silicone Diver Bands items in watchbarn com22 store on eBay! I have no connections with this seller - apart from the fact that his natos are great.

Congratulations, you got a heck of a deal on that Plank kit. Probably about 300-400 USd less than they were selling for just a few months ago.

    Very nice picture!
Tips noted -- I will look for the Hadley Roma bracelet.
I'll also likely make a leather Zulu strap with Zulu hardware (will post pictures if I make one).

I know we can hardly conclude with a single sale, but do you think this is a start of a slow decline in preowned market valuation of the Kingston as more become available? The last couple of Kingstons stayed on the preowned market longer than the previous pieces.

Who knows -- and it certainly has made a lengthy conversation elsewhere. In any case, it's a wonderful watch, from everything I read.
