Making full use of the LRRP's GMT hand

A few times every year, my wife visits companies on the US East Coast. And there's a 6 hrs. time difference between (this time) New York and The Netherlands. Time to dig out the LRRP! I wear the watch regularly, but during her business trips, I wear it more 'consciously' so to speak! As you can see, the GMT hand is showing the NY time. Although it's pretty cold out here, there's a lot of sunshine as you can see on the pics!

Nice photos, and to me what the GMT is designed for.
I don't have a LRRP, but do have a project GMT deposit in (First 60, possibly the 2nd or 3rd in line). I do use a Rolex 16750 as well as an Ocean GMT. Exactly the same scenario as yours, wife traveling! My wife goes back to Europe every summer to visit friends and family, as well as to "escape the oppressive heat" here in the deep South. It's very handy to know what her time is before I call her. I made the mistake several years ago, believe it was her first trip, called her at 9PM our time, which was 3AM her time!! Suffice to say, she wasn't too happy to hear form me at that hour. When she heard my voice, she immediately thought that something had happened over here and it was a call with bad news. When I told her no, just wanted to see how your day went, she let me know that it first off wasn't day and second she was sound asleep. After that I got out the 16750 and set the bezel to plus 7 hours. Never made that mistake again. What's really funny though, ever so often, she gets mixed up and calls or texts me in the middle of the night! Of course if she does it, it's OK.

Re: Making full use of the LRRP's GMT hand

Great photo's. I got my LRRP last year sometime, I live in the UK and work middle east, getting home every 28 days for a short 6 or 7 day visit. So great my LRRP can track both zones, keep my main time to middle east and use GMT hand when I'm back. Problem was I kept looking at the time and panicking that I was late every now and then, lol.

Unfortunately I stopped wearing my LRRP to work, it could handle the punishment it was getting, but every new scratch and scuff was breaking my heart, its shinny new looks fading lol. I now wear my LRRP at home and have a Sea-Fighter DLC for work, which is one tough watch I can tell you.

Re: Making full use of the LRRP's GMT hand

The LRRP is a true GMT, whereas the 1655 and Explorer II models with fixed bezels were meant to give cavers and other folks deprived of a proper sunrise/sunset schedule the ability to tell AM from PM on the dial. In other words, the 24 hour hand was meant to display the same time as the hour hand but with a 24 hour context.

With a GMT like the LRRP, I like to set the 24 hour hand to Geneva, and then I rotate the bezel the correct amount to account for how far a location is from GMT. It requires you to know the GMT offset for specific locations, but that's not so hard.

This is true, though if I'm not mistaken, the newer Explorer II's have GMT functionality as well (bezel is still fixed, of course).

You can set it any way you wish, it has a 24 hour hand. It can track 2 timezones with a fixed bezel (even though traditionally it was meant to show AM vs PM. A moving bezel lets you track 3 timezones.

Right. Were the 4th hands ever tied to the hour hand (moving at half speed around the dial) in any Exp II movement such that they only served as 24hr. hands?

I don't think so. I think they have always had the same movements as the contemporary GMTs in the Rolex lineup so they can be set in the same manner.

The 2nd hand on the LRRP is really useful, just those on the EX II. Especially if you travel around in two timing zone you will appreciate its usefulness.
