Confused Getting the (old) Spitfire, chrono or regular?

Grettings people, I am currently looking at the old Spitfire watches (not that old, the 3717 and 3255). I'm having real trouble deciding which one to get, so I figured I'd ask for insight.

Firstly, I wonder about the movements. How are the IWC movements in terms of toughness? I don't have a dangerous job or anything, but I don't like the feeling of being constantly nervous of damaging my watch as if it is made of fine china. I got this idea that the chrono one is less shock resistant simply because it is more complicated, but I have no fact to back this up. Comments?

Also, I like the design of the chrono better, but I want this watch for a lifetime and possibly as an heirloom, so I wonder, which design do you think will stand up better to the test of time?

Also, I would like to have a bracelet, but I don't think I'll shell out for the IWC one. Does anyone know if it is possible to get custom made bracelets anywhere that don't look like crap?

Re: Getting the (old) Spitfire, chrono or regular?

It's a tough choice. I have both, and I like both. But I wear the chronograph a good deal more.

I put the 3255 on a different IWC strap and added an IWC deployant. Hee it is with the original strap.

One thing I particularly like about the Spitfire, both models, is the guilloche dial giving the watches a sort of Art Deco look.

The movements in both cases are base ETA movements (base ETA 2892 for the IW3255 and base Valjoux 7750 for the IW3717 chronograph) , but modified for IWC. These have a reputation for being dependable and durable movements. I don't wear mine for strenuous activities, but nor do I baby them either. I haven't had the 3717 long, but I also have its predecessor -- an IW3706 Spitfire Chronograph with a similar movement. I've had the 3706 for about 7 years, and it's seen a lot of use. I recently had it in for routine service and expect it, and my other IWCs to out last me.

The bracelet is very nice, but I have to say that I prefer this particular watch on the strap. I just think it looks better on the strap. However, I did wear my 3706 on the bracelet for a number of years.

If you do decide on the bracelet, I strongly recommend sticking with the IWC bracelet. True, it's expensive. But you'll have a fine watch, and the quality of the bracelet should be commensurate with the quality of the watch. In addition, the IWC bracelet is beautifully made and finished, and very comfortable. It's also easy to add or remove links to size it properly.

Tough decision -- but you can't really go wrong either way. And you'll probably wind up with both eventually anyway. But you'll need to move on one. With the recent revamping of the Pilot line both the 3255 and 3717 are likely to be getting scarce.

Would you put a chrono to use? If not, why bother. Function over fashion. Plus the auto will have fewer components to service/fail.

I have a Mark XV purchased in 2001 for my 30th. It's been fantastic in all respects. For my 40th, a Spitfire XV. My daughters will each receive one at the appropriate time.

I know the movements have changed since the XV and I have not educated my self as to the changes. I would suggest you research it.

If you decide upon an IWC, the bracelet really should be considered. I was uncertain tho hold no regrets on having purchased it. It is a very nice piece.

I always had mixed feeling for the non-chrono spitfire.. somehow the center of the dial seemed empty
LOVE the 3717-02 good size and awesome dial actually like it over 3717-01
Ive heard only good things about the IWC bracelets as well but they are sure expensive and the spitfire seems to look better with a strap like most other pilot watches
as for movements they are eta's so must be bulletproof I have the AT chrono but was considering between the spit chrono and the at chrono
