    Ocean 2000

    Hello
I have the opportunity to have a 20 year old dream fulfilled by purchasing a 2000 Ocean watch.
But before I buy it, I have just a few practical issues.
    1. How can I be sure on its authenticity, do you know if there is found copies of these watches?
    2. How is your experience regarding the functionality of the clocks, must they be often serviced?

Hope that there is someone who we should be sweet to answer these questions for me.

    Best Regards

Hello Peter. There's nothing special about the Ocean 2000 that would require more than normal service frequency. However, it's an old watch and may, or may not, have internal issues that require attention. The best way see if the watch is real would be to open up the back and compare the movement to photos of a genuine Ocean 2000. Does the watch come with all boxes and papers? It gets to be hard to find complete sets with watches this old, but I my opinion, it's worth it to hold out. Ultimately though, if you're not 100% sure of the buyer you should pass. The Ocean 2000 is an old watch, but they're not impossible to find. It would be better to keep looking than puchase a fake.

Good luck, and post photos if you decide to buy.
    WTB - nothing for now!

    Re: Ocean 2000

the ocean 2000 is a great piece to acquire not only for its engineering and historical place in IWC's history, but it also happens to look nothing like the diver watches out today.

    1) there have not been any convincingly good fakes out there, assuming you have some passing knowledge of what the watch looks like. that said, if you are looking to buy the ocean Bund (which was the military issue of the 2000 and which generally fetch higher prices than the 'civilian' 2000 because there were fewer issued), there have been reputed cases where unscrupulous sellers have fabricated Bunds using cases/parts from genuine 2000's along with sundry third-party or IWC parts.

you always want to check the buyer's references, ask what is included with the watch which might aid with its authenication such as recent factory servicing, authenication certificates, etc. it never hurts to post the seller's pics on the various IWC forums to get informed second-opinions too.

    2) the versions which used the eta 2892 movements are relatively easy to service and the most affordable to maintain since the 2892 has been in production for decades and the movement of choice for many different brands/models. the specialized versions of the Ocean which included the amag (anti-magnetic) version and the [now] uncommon quartz version are more costly to service.

normal replacement intervals apply for the movement and seals. outside of the movement, other typical replacement parts except for perhaps the hands, eg. the bezel, crown, dial, bracelet links can only be obtained by sending the watch to IWC/Richemont.

always nice to see a ocean 2000 owner joining the ranks. let us know how the search pans out.
