    Thoughts on size..

    Hi

Im looking to purchase the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic but cant decide on the size. I have a pretty small wrist and im considering either the 40 mm, H32515535

    or the 37 mm, H32455585

Also i kind a like the rose gold hands on the 37 mm.. But is it big enough.. ist really hard to tell from pictures around the web - aspecially close up wristshots doesn´t give a true impression. Seeing the 37 mm on youtube it not only looks big enough but looks GREAT It seems to me the model in general wears larger than size. I have tried to find the lug to lug lenght on both but cant seem to find it

    .. opinions please

    Regards

If there isn't one available locally for you to try, maybe try on some other watches that are 40mm and see how they feel?

I wish there were.. but there are no AD of Hamilton in Denmark and therefore you hardly see any Hamilton watches...so its a chance ride with a web purchase

Can you afford to buy both and return the watch that doesn't fit as well?

you might want to go to a local jeweler and try a similiar watch that is 37mm - 38mm. This will give you an idea if the size is right for you.

    Re: Thoughts on size..

I struggled with the same choice you are making.

I had a 37mm Viewmatic and after about a week traded it in for a 40mm. My wrists are about 180mm, so I could probably have gotten away with either of them. I really wanted to settle on the 37mm, because I think the size is more traditional for a dress watch and where the date window falls is kind of nicer. However a few things put me off it:

-- The lug width on the 37mm is only 18mm. Most 18mm straps taper to 16mm near the buckle. This strap width somehow looked a bit too "dainty" to me. The 40mm has a 20mm lug width, which to me looked and felt better (I have the leather strap version, which does not taper).

-- The height of the 37mm watch is I think the same as the 40mm watch. They aren't exactly "fat", but they're not slim either. The display back, domed crystal, and 2824 movement make for a thickish case. Now, aesthetically, the thickness of the case looks to me in proportion to the rest of the watch in the 40mm size, while the curve of the watch lets your cuff easily slide back and forth over it so it doesn’t seem to be fat at all. The 37mm however looks more of a blimp on my wrist, and for some reason looked fatter and seemed to catch my cuff more.

--The major reason I didn’t like the 37mm was that the date change clicked over at about 20-30mins after midnight, whereas my 40mm is nearly spot on. Though that’s probably just how things worked out for me and nothing to do with the sizes.

--I think there is a thread somewhere else on this forum debating sizes, and the suggestion was that 37mm is now regarded as a ladies’ size. So if fashions are important to you again the favorite would be the 40mm. Again though, I think 37mm looks fine on the (my) wrist providing the profile of the watch is a bit slimmer than the Viewmatics.

I’d suggest you compare the 40mm Viematic with the look and feel of the thin-o-matic 38mm which I believe is very slightly thinner than the Viematic because there is no display back. My impression is that it is the best looking and proportioned of Hamilton’s range in 37/38mm sizes, though personally I prefer having the display back, added water resistance, and crown guards of my Viewmatic. If I were choosing again from scratch however, I think I might well go for a 38mm thin-o-matic, though I'd probably end up buying the Viewmatic afterwards for the display back.

    Re: Thoughts on size..

    Hi you all

So i pulled it on the 37 mm.. after i measured a watch on a coworker who wears a watch in similar style - no bezel and so on - and i received the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic and it LOOKS GREAT!! - but alas... it just isn´t me.. i don´t know if its the size or the style.. i think i just find it too dressy...

SO if any of you out here is in the market for a 37 mm model - i have one up for sale Just been on my wrist a couple of hours and so i left it in the drawer.

Its not the first time i´ve gone wrong with an online purchase only but still its downer everytime.. With the Hamilton i was turning my years of attention from divers to more classic watches but now im finding my self - as many times before - fixing my gaze at those versatile tough divers once more...

Have you look at the Khaki Field Autos? I love mine in 38mm. Quite chunky, display back yet not too big. Just right, and you could definitely wear with a suit if partnered with the right strap! Very simple, versatile watch.
