Re: Altitude, Barometric Pressure and ABC Watches Explained

    Great post and very informative

As a new abc-owner I'm curious to know how others are using the storm warning features. A quick drop in barometric pressure in a short time is said to indicate bad weather. But are there any key figures to aim at when setting the alarm? In short, what is a quick drop and in what time span?

Edit: Never mind this question. I'm sure that this will be answered in this newly created thread...

it is easier to use if you don't know the desired longtitude/latitude, just fill country/city into the blanks.

A short Tutorial on „How to use and calibrate a Casio Altimeter“:

    1. Attach a string to your Casio AB(C) watch (feel free to use any length)
    2. Abseil the watch into an Abyss until you hold the string’s end between your fingers
    3. Get the watch up again
    4. Use a measuring tape to measure the string length
    5. Success! Now you have carefully calibrated the Altimeter
    6. Important!!! The Altimeter Lock will stay enabled, unless you shorten or lengthen the string

    I say - let's make it sticky!
and for that matter, Joakim's (I think) thread about WR (water resistance) deserves to be sticky too.

which leads me to another question - why not make a sticky category, "Tutorials"?

    mods? please? :thanks

    Raj,

As one of the forum members who received a Suunto Elementum Terra to use and report on I really appreciate your post.

Thank you for taking the time to write that so an ABC watch newbie like me can understand most of it.

    Just some additions...

Not all ABC watches can perform altitude or barometric lock. Casios generally do not! For such functionality I recommend Suunto, Highgear or Nike.
Just a note: the Suunto Vector doesn't have a lock on it, either.

    Oh, and excellent post Raj.

but theres something that i don´t undertand.if i input the correct altitude, the barometer drifts about 2-4 hpa witch is very impressive,BUT if you input MSL,then the altitude is incorrect!! i´ve tried in my local airport ( 179 meters) and i set the core´s barometer there and the altitude reading was WAY OFF!!!!!!!! how is this possible?

    Raj,

I really appreciate your work with this post. I have been trying to get a grip on the technicalities involved in barometric pressure and altitude measurements with these timepieces... and I have to say I am glad I found your posting.
While other sources I've seen confused me more, yours has just what I was looking for and clearly explained.

    Kudos!
