Yeah, it's possible. First you have to have a replacement crystal and those are nearly imposssible to source. If you have one though here's how to proceed:

    1. Remove the caseback and module from the 5600 (or 5000, 5100, 5200, 5300, 5400, 5500, 5700, 5800).
    2. Break out the crystal to be replaced. The glass will splinter so be prepared or you'll end up with tiny shards everywhere. It can not be removed without breaking it.
    3. Save the old gasket because you may need it.
    4. Clean out the area where the crystal is to be seated. If you'll be reusing the gasket it will need to be cleaned as well - be careful not to break it.
    5. Fit the gasket into the case.
    6. Place the crystal into the opening EVENLY and press it into place as much as possible by using your thumbs. The best way to do this is to fit the top of the crystal in and then press down on the bottom untill you can't get it to go any further.
    7. Once you've got it mostly in turn the case over so that the crystal is facing down and place it on a cloth on a stable working surface. Now take the heel of your hand and press down firmly. You'll hear, and feel, the crystal snap into place. Be sure you've got it in place before doing this or the steel case will crack the crystal.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers, Greg

Thanks for the detailed info. I do not have a replacement yet so for now I have removed most of the scratches with 400 grit wet sanding paper set on a very flat surface followed by 500 grit, then finished with green and yellow diamond lapping compound. I was was very surprized and pleased with the results.

You could always find a beaten up oldie on ebay and use that for parts.
