    Most Expensive Wristwatch.....Investment?

    Okay,

This may be a somewhat ridiculous question but can extremely high end watches like the Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon (over $1 million!) actually be an investment? Seems as though it would be a folly to put so much money into a wristwatch. Silly question I know but it does make me wonder if people who buy these high end watches do it for investment purposes or simply because they can? I suspect the latter.

An investment was when used Ferrari roadsters sold for less than $6k back in the 1960s.

    Hi Tic Talk,

I know you are a VC aficionado - what are your opinions on the Vacheron & Constantin Tour d'Ile? I think there were 7 produced.

Well I'm on a bit of a rant against artifical values since VC bragged that one of their vintage uber-complicated pocket watches sold for $1.8M at auction last year (one of James Ward Packard's)...should have more upfront that THEY bought it. I'm left wondering what was the real value of the watch vs the publicity? Anyway, they are not the first and won't be the last manufacture to "enhance" their collector's value in this manner.

With that one and the 5004 and 5191 P; yes. But you'll need the deep pockets of a Wall Street Tapeworm to
    own them.

A watch is a good not an investment.

I believe there have been a couple Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillons sold at a profit on the secondary market, but I also believe that you need several Pateks previously purchased and an interview with Mr. Stern before you are allowed to purchase one from a Patek Philippe Authorised Dealer. I don't think I could part with one if I ever had the opportunity to own one.

Maybe one can equate it to buying cars. It is anybodies guess as to which of the 2012 models will be collectible in the future however if you buy a top of the line 2012 exotic there is a better chance that it will one day be desirable. Maybe?

Maybe, but I think you're just asking to lose your investment. Just take that money and give it to a hedge fund or PE firm. I'd be much more comfortable with that than going and buying a watch and hoping it goes up in value.
