Gilbert Mantle clock with connection to early blues singer, Margaret Johnson

This Gilbert mantle clock is one of the coolest things I have run across on ebay, and the historical connection, from what I can figure, commanded little to no premium. What a sad commentary on this economy. I know this has to have significant value above and beyond it's value as a clock ... to somebody.

I'll just give you the link to the eBay listing. I have listened to a couple recordings by Margaret Johnson on youtube, and what is not in the listing was that in the 1930s, she was the pianist and back up vocalist for Billie Holiday. She was a very successful early black female musician and singer.

I think it's a great piece, and well worth the time and effort that will go into its restoration.

Nice find. Be sure to write up everything you know about the clock and put it in a plastic bag within the clock for the next generation. Love the blues connection.

I still have some homework to do on this. I have found a George Wooldridge who passed in 1959 in Fresno, where the seller of the clock is located. That doesn't mean it didn't travel a lot since then, but if I can find a descendent, perhaps they can shed some light on this thing.
