On a number of occasions we at the ‘Dink have proven the affinity that certain authoritarian Middle Eastern leaders have toward fine Swiss timepieces. In particular, Saddam Hussein seems to have enjoyed giving out fine Swiss timepieces, often with quartz movements.
Continuing in that trend, currently on Antiquorum's DirectBid is an interesting Universal Geneve ladies watch with the Iraqi Coat of Arms used between 1965 and 1991 on the dial by 9 o’clock. Additionally, “Saddam Hussein” is printed in gold Arabic characters by 3 o’clock. The dial is an iridescent gray and the watch features a quartz movement. The watch also includes the original UG buckle.
The watch is currently at $200 and the bidding ends on Monday, November 29. For more information, click here.
