    Master Control Memovox Question

Does anyone use the Memovox as a dress watch? At 14mm it seems thick, but I want to see if it is something that can be pulled of comfortably with cuffs. I am not too worried about the watch fitting the strictest definition of what a dress watch is, I just want to know if it can be done comfortably with some photographic evidence and personal testimony

Pictures of the watch being worn in formal clothing would be great, as would any pictures showing the thickness of the case. Side by Sides with any of the 12mm or less variants of the master control series would be superb.

    thanks.

PS: I am not anywhere near a JLC AD, so I cannot go see these watches in person without making a lengthy trip. I figure asking on a forum would be the next sensible choice of action.

I've worn this vintage 70's Memovox with both a suit for work and on a croc strap with black tie. It fits under French cuffs.

    JLC Master Memovox

I posted this in the JLC forum, but it seems to be a slow moving place so I figure I would re-post here. I am interested in the JLC Master Memovox, but I am concerned about its 14mm case height being too thick to easily fit under the cuff of a dress shirt. I really like the watch except for that one detail. I wanted to know if anyone else has had experience with the watch in a dress environment and if it had difficulty slipping under a cuff. Pictures of this would be great.

I also do not live anywhere near an AD for JLC, so if anyone can take pictures of the thickness of the watch (maybe comparing it to other JLC watches), it would be awesome.

    Thanks

My IWC 5001 is 13.9mm, it fits very nicely under the cuff of all of my Canali dress shirts. I do however have an extra inch added to the left cuff on my tailored shirts otherwise the watch won't fit. 14mm is definitely thick, but I don't think you'll have any major problems. I have a 7" wrist.

Allay your fears, friend. While the Master Memovox is thicker than a "traditional" dress watch, it still fits perfectly under a barrel, turnback, or French cuff. I've worn it with all three cuff types and can personally endorse it's use as a business formal dress watch.

It may also benefit you to check this recent post by Dixan (Another (non-Omega) new arrival, though it won't be staying for long...).
His photography skills are superior to my own and he has more than one JLC to compare thickness with.

Ah, you flatter me, N.O. Your photos are plenty fine themselves. In fact some of your shots of your Memovox inspired me to take the plunge. I totally agree that the Master Memovox, though a bit taller than most traditional "dress" watches, works fine with most types of dress shirt cuffs. All of my dress shirts have pretty close fitting cuffs, but the Memovox still manages to fit under them nicely. I think it partially has to do with the smooth shape of the case and bezel. The same thickness diver's watch would likely catch on cuffs more, because of functional bezel edges, etc.

To the OP: I, too, was concerned about the height of the MM, but I'm glad I gave it a chance in the end. I couldn't be happier with it now. Much of its thickness is in the "resonance chamber" or whatever it's called, and that is mostly carried under the main body of the watch. What I mean is, the lugs (and therefore where the strap attaches to the watch), are higher up than much of the "thickness" of the watch, so when worn, the domed case back/resonance chamber gets pulled down "into" the wearer's wrist. Basically, you only see the top half of the watch, so it doesn't look too thick. More importantly, much of the watch's thickness is down below the "surface plane" of the watch, which is made up of the main body of the watch, the bezel, the crystal, the lugs, and the strap where it attaches to the watch. This effectively means there's less watch "sticking up" to catch on shirt cuffs. Make sense? (Sorry, it's hard to describe properly.)

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your decision. I say get one; the Master Memovox is a truly special piece!

you shouldn't have any probs with the memovox being worn with formal dressing.
