Playing around with my new Nikon camera and my JLC....trying to take better macro shots...

    Dear fellow WIS,

Finally stopped being stingy (camera wise) and got a decent camera (Nikon P310), so (hopefully) should be able to take some better macro shots of my JLCs now...herewith a first attempt:

Any input, and tips & tricks on how to take better pictures are very welcome!

    Thanks and BR,

    Pieter

Looks great, it may be just a tad dark but otherwise very nice shot. ! Can you tell us what lens and settings you used?

Great photo Pieter. I tried to take some photos at the weekend of my one too with my iPhone but I struggled to get any close ups. Must buy a better camera...

Although as I was travelling on the train into London the other day I for the first time caught a glimpse of the blue hands on the sub-dials. It must have been the correct angle that I was pointing my wrist but anyway this weekend I also managed to see them and tried to take a photo with my iPhone. This is the best I could do but the hands are more spectacular in real life.

The one thing I notice with this watch is that the face colour seems to change a lot depending on the light conditions. In lower light conditions like yours it seems grey and then sometimes it looks a lot whiter which is also really beautiful. I love this watch by the way even though sometimes when I go to look at the time I actually forget to read the time and end up staring at it

Same as you Nigel, its hard to splurge on a fancy camera to take cool Macro shots when these camera phones are getting better and better

You have a beautiful watch. I really love the Master Chrono. That one or maybe the Eight Day is on my wish list. As for photo tips, try opening the aperture as far as possible which will give a shallower depth of field. That can give some great effects in macro shots.

Lighting is key. As you are using a point and shoot, speed lights and/or affordable studio lighting are pretty much out. Next best option would be to either look at buying a modeling light (not a strobe), use window lighting, or go outdoors and find a place with shade. If outdoors, I usually bring a piece of black or white poster board to serve as the background.
