New Stealthing Project - the making of the "Buzzbait"

NOTE from Moderator: Since members ask very often which watch it is that is shown at the top of the forum start page - well, here it is - the "Buzzbait":

I just got done ordering all of the pieces for my next stealthing project. This will be a DW-6900 with all of the extraneous color taken out of it. The project starts with a DW-6900MC-7A.

Notice that there is no blue printing on the watch face, as you normally find on American DW-6900's. The blue has also been removed from the large eye, and the perimeter copper printing has been replaced with white printing. The biggest difference, of course, is the all black middle button.

The next step will be to slap on a brand new black DW-6900 bezel, with all paint removed via Goof-Off.

I will also swap out the strap for a fresh DW-5600E strap, as I have really been liking the comfort of the 5600E strap lately. If I get creative, I may try to find a way to remove the black buckle from the DW-6900 strap, and place it on the DW-5600E strap. I'm not quite sure what holds the black plastic buckle onto the DW-6900 strap, but it doesn't appear to be a spring bar.

I may even try to fashion my own face protectors, if I get time. I have some thin spring steel in the garage that I can use.

The watch was ordered from Ace Digital Club, via amazon.com. The bezel and strap are coming in from Casio Sales and Service.

Sounds great! I was toying with the idea of doing the very same thing. I had the Michael Lau model awhile back and loved everything about it except the backlight logo. This would make something very similar except cleaner in a way.

Now what about the module from the metallic series (negative display). Would really help it to be super stealth.

    Re: New Stealthing Project

I thought about going with a negative display, but I'm just not sure. I've never had a negative display DW-6900, and I'm worried about the legibility. Legibility might not be a problem on some G-Shocks with larger digits, but the DW-6900 digits are kind of small in comparison to some of the newer G-Shocks.

Maybe someone can chime in, who has a negative display DW-6900. If the negative display is easy enough to read, I would definitely consider getting some polarizing film for the project.

I can't really comment on the 6900 negative but I have viewed other G's with the neg. display. In my experience the neg display is great on model with very large digits but smaller digits are not so easy for me to read at a glance. Others might no better about this specific model or variations like the blue and red eye displays (numbers in blue or red) and how they might be visually.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

I have a great update. My DW-6900MC shipped a few hours after I ordered it, and will arrive tomorrow afternoon. It turns out that Ace Digital Club is just a couple hours drive from my home.

The Casio Sales and Service order also shipped a couple hours after ordering, and will arrive by Saturday. I must say that Casio Sales and Service has very reasonable shipping rates, in comparison to so many online merchants. USPS Priority Mail shipping for less than $5.00.

    Re: New Stealthing Project

The DW-6900MC-7A arrived this afternoon, and it is very much to my liking. The middle button is nice and black, and the face of the watch is all black, white, and gray. Perfect for a stealthing project.

There are a few notable things about this DW-6900. First is the engraving on the case back. It simply says "Japan M" as the only reference to manufacturing location. This is interesting, as this G-Shock is sold in the US, where the manufacturing location is normally put on all such merchandise. You could infer that this G-Shock was made in Japan, and obviously not made for sale in Japan.

Also, the digital display is exceptionally clear. I have DW-6900's that were made in China, and they pale in comparison. The difference in clarity is really quite startling. This is an unexpected benefit, as I assumed that the displays were identical on all DW-6900's.

I now have a fresh black bezel soaking in Goof-Off, robbed from a Chinese DW-6900, purchased at Wal-Mart. I still await the fresh DW-5600E strap, which should arrive in the next couple days.

Sorry about the crummy pic, but the sun is too far below the horizon for an adequate picture.

So what are you going to do with the original strap and bezel? Put them on the other 6900 that you stole the bezel from? Seems kind of silly to stealth a bezel and then put it on another watch when you could put it back on the same one and have 2 great Gs. Unless I missed something in the post witch is possible.

    Re: New Stealthing Project

The black stealthed bezel goes on the DW6900MC-7A. I have a replacement black bezel coming in the same shipment as the DW5600E strap, to replace the black bezel from the Walmart DW-6900.

The black&white Jammin' bezel and strap will be put away for another day. I may leave them "as is" for a future change of pace. Or I may attempt a camouflage project, where I use tan and green dye to create a military camo effect.

    Hi Buzzbait,

Received my 2 Euro ver 6900's yesterday, well pleased! Swapped the bezels around and they look great imho I was really surprised how big the module cases were! bloody huge! lol

The neg display isn't too bad, but would defintely be a lot better if the digits were bigger for sure. Hope these pics help. Looking forward to you results!
