Everything you need to know about the Sturmanskie (Штурманские) 15 jewel and 17 jewel version

    Sturmanskie Gagarin (Штурманские)
S(h)turmanskie (Штурманские ) watches were specially produced by the 1st MWF for Soviet Air Force (Военно-Воздушные Силы ) pilots and were never available for the open market, nor for sale in the military stores (Voentorgs). The movement was based on the Pobeda (Победа) K-26 movement and produced with LIPs R-25 equipment, which was bought in France.

A 15 jewel version was produced from 1949 to 1953. The 17 jewel version was produced from 1954 to approximately 1960. The 17 jewels version became famous as the first watch ever in space, worn by USSR cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (April 12, 1961). It was due to this event that the 1st MWF was renamed to Poljot (Полет), which means Flight.

Both watches are very popular with soviet watch collectors and not easy to find in a reasonable condition – especially the condition of the dial, which is in most cases very poor. Because they are so sought-after by collectors, some sellers assemble “new” watches from different parts, including parts that are the same – or almost the same – harvested from old Pobeda and Sportivnie watches. Dials however remain a problem, so we see brand new copies which have until now been easy to spot. On most new dials the name Штурманские is written on a curved path, while on an original dial each individual letter is set vertically.

Fortunately there are collectors who have written articles about these watches and how to recognise a genuine one – but information is scattered, so I have endeavoured to gather all known details together in this article.

    Details of the 15-jewel Штурамснкие:

    • 3 piece case; width 33 mm, height 12,4 mm, dial width 29,8 mm
    • Pillow crown
    • Red coloured second hand with a clover leaf shaped end
    • Straight skelettform hour and minute hand are blue steeled with lume
    • Top loading movement with hacking mechanism
    • Deep jewel recesses on the wheel bridge with 15 КАМНИ and 1мчэ logo
    • Flat brushed finished movement in 1949 and 1950, Moscow (Geneva) striped since 1951
    • Top down screws for the balance jewels from 1949 to 1952, bottom up screws in 1953
    • Clean spring ratchet wheel, so no marks
    • Serial number of 5 digits, quarter number, year on movement

    Details of the 17-jewel Штурамснкие:

    • 2 piece case; width 33 mm, height 12,1 mm, dial width 29,4 mm
    • The 2 extra jewels are for the anti-schock balance
    • Pill-shaped crown
    • Red coloured second hand with a clover leaf shaped end
    • Lanzenform hour and minute hand are blue steel with lume
    • Bottom loading movement with hacking mechanism (this is why the dial is slightly smaller compared with the dial of the 15 jewel version)
    • Deep jewel recesses on the wheel bridge with17 КАМНИ and 1мчэ logo
    • Moscow (Geneva) striped finished movement
    • Spring ratchet wheel with 3 stars and 1мчэ
    • Serial number of 6 digits, no date

    Questions:

    • It looks like there are also 15j versions made in 1954, some even with the same style of hands as the 17j version
    • It is unclear exactly when the production of the 17j version was ceased (early 1960s?)

Re: Everything you need to know about the Sturmanskie (Штурманские) 15 jewel and 17 jewel version

Extra information serial number + year:
I seems that the 17 jewel version also exists with a serial number of 6 digits, plus Year.

Extra information dial 15 jewel version:
The dial of a 15 jewel version is a bit larger than the 17 jewel version (approx 0,4mm).
The dial is also a bit curved at the edge.
15 jewel version dials have a sparkling paint, except (probably) the earliest dials.

Extra information dial 17 jewel version:
The dial of a 17 jewel version is completely flat.
The dial of a 17 jewel version doesn't have a sparkling paint.

Штурманские тип 1, Победа с ЦСС - Советы после 1945 - Форум любителей часов

    Part 3: Information

    According to Chasprom:
1 тип- 15 камней- 1949-1953 гг. (без надписей).
    2 тип- 17 камней- 1954-1960 гг. (ГС 1 МЧЗ).
    2 тип- 17 камней- 1961-1962 гг. (1 МЧЗ).

    Part 4: Takeaways

    - According to the "author's manuscript", the 15-jewel Sturmanskie should come equipped with the well-known pillow crown, an hour hand that extends exactly to the minute track, and a second hand that extends slightly beyond the minute track, among other things.
    - Mass production of the Sturmanskie first began in Q3-1949.
    - Geneva striping first appeared in Q4-1950.
    - The 17-jewel Sturmanskie was produced until 1962; from 1954-1960, barrel wheels were marked "ГС1МЧЗ", while the final two years of production have barrel wheels marked "1МЧЗ".

There are however still doubs about the year mark on a 17 jewel version. So far we have only seen year marks till 1957. So the change from ГС 1 МЧЗ to 1 МЧЗ on the ratchet wheel could be 1958 instead of 1960.

Note: there are doubts about the year they changed from "ГС1МЧЗ" to "1МЧЗ. So far we only have seen the year mark 1954 till 1957.

    Note about the dials:
The dial of the 15 jewels version has a curved edge. Except the first 2 years it also has a sparkling paint.
The dial of the 17 jewel version is completely flat and it has no-sparkling paint.
