    Question 2824-2 Mainspring Replacement Question.

    Hello All,

I am going to replace the mainspring on an ETA 2824-2 movement. I was wondering if anyone can outline the basic procedure so I have a sequence to follow. I have bought a complete barrel with arbor and mainspring so that makes things a little easier.

    Thanks,
    Mike.

I'm sorry but this is the kind of question that if you have to ask, then you are nowhere near
the skill level needed to attempt this.

The procedure to dimantle and service one of these can be found in service documents from ETA's website.

Thanks! Well actually I have done the job. I removed the rotor then the automatic winding bridge followed by the ratchet wheel and then the barrel bridge. I then removed the barrel and slipped the replacement into it's place. Followed the reverse proceedure and now the movement is working fine. It was a very easy job and my post was just me wanting to ensure there were no pitfalls.

Did you clean and lubricate everything?

Cleaned and lubricated all that I removed which was not everything. Cleaned with naphtha and lubed with Moebius oils. The movement was only 2 years old and had little use when the mainspring broke (strange) so it was exceptionally clean. Gave everything a rub with Rodico before reassembly just to make sure there was no other contamination. The movement came out of a Fortis - replaced the Fortis movement with a new 2824 from Switzerland (swapped out the signed rotor) and have finally got round to fixing the movement out of the Fortis. Now I have a spare 2824-2 with which I think I am going to build up into another watch with parts from either Ebay or Frei & Borel. Great hobby!

I have a Vacheron Constantin with a dial that was replaced sometime in the past - it is 1967 and the "&" was left out between Vacheron Constantin. So re-dial of the re-dial is next on the cards!

I'm glad it went well for you.

    Well done.

This thread really pleases me ( I won't say why, but I expect you can guess).

And you are right - it is a fascinating hobby.

My apologies, I wrongly assumed that you had no experience and only wanted to save you the heartache
    of ruining your watch.
    Well done.

Moebius or Mobil that is the question.

My next project is for me mouthwatering! Here are a couple of photos of the Vacheron and Constantin. I have already hit a bit of a wall though. I removed the stem and 2 case screws but the movement did not was to come out. It is a cal.1003 which is just 1.64 mm thick so obviously not going to pry it out! Next solution is to take the watch to a guy here in Austin who has a good reputation and let him get the movement out for me. BTW I have removed that horrible strap!
