    General watch repair advice...

I'm completely new to watch repair and would like to consult with some of you experts for some advice.

First, I did order a watch repair book and it should arrive by sometime this week. So I'll have something to read/look off of when I get started.

This is what I'd like to be able to do. I'd like to open up some of my watches, removed the crown so I can get the movement out of the case itself. Then I'd like to be able to remove the hour/min/sec hands and dial so I can possibly change out the hands and dials.

Will this require extensive knowledge? Will all type of work doable with general tools? I've also put in an order for a 30 piece kit, which has some general tools included.

Some advice would be greately appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will need more specialist tools eventually if you want to take your curiosity further, however, with basic tools and care you should be able to uncase a movement and remove the hands and dial. However, I would stress the need to take some sort of rudimentary course, something like the timezone watch school L1. For $50 you get access to the material that will teach the very basics.

You don't have to spend the $$$ to get the course materials it's the techniques and basic practices you're after. Then I would buy a load of cheap none working watches or movements and practice and practice. Either get them from Ebay or find an amiable watchmaker who will give them to you if asked nicely.

Thanks a bunch NEG. I appreciate the info. I purchased a book on watch repair so as soon as I get my hands on it I'll try to learn a thing or two. I also got a bunch of cheap replica stuff from China I picked up the last time I was there so I should have enough to work on.
