    Need help with ordering crown

I'm looking at ordering a new crown for my old Caravelle divers watch but I can't seem to find the exact size I need. I got the tap size and the case tube size all good but the diameter of the crown is .10mm off from what is available. The size of the crown is 4.90mm but the closest available one is 5.00mm. The space around the case tube appears to offer 1.30mm of extra crown space but even with the original crown it seems pretty close. I'm wondering if I should order the crown that is a bit larger or go safe with the 4.50mm that they also offer.

If you provide the case number we should be able to provide you with the genuine crown number.

N8 is the only type of verification on the case, it's a real oldy

N8 means that the watch was made in 1978 (not a real oldy IMHO ). The case number will be on the inside of the back.

Hi, I hope no one minds me jumping in here but I have the same problem. I found this Caravelle about a year ago and recently decided to try fitting a crown to it.

I don't see a case number inside or out. I was searching for a generic with the following specs:

    Crown OD approximately 5mm

(Pendant, case?) post OD 2mm, ID 1.6 mm length 1.5 mm

    Tap 8 (I tried stem extenders with taps 7, 8, and 9)

I found a couple I thought might work but haven't ordered one yet.

I'm looking not only to replace this crown but learn more about the process as many watches I find are in need of one.

    Thanks in advance.

Interesting, thanks, but what additional measurement would this give me?

Unknown - but it looks impressive hanging on the wall beside the bench.

This allows you centralize all the measuring tools and test for an inference fit as opposed to reading a scale.

In actuality many just pull out the correct assortment, eyeball the particulars and test fit a few for a replacement.

With experience it almost never takes more than a couple of tries.

An assortment sounds fine. I think I'll take my measurements, try a few and see what happens.

    Thanks for for the enlightenment!
