'There was a fellow inmate selling nice 6498 clones here on WUS. I picked up 4 from him and so far have no issues with them. Look for mooieklokjes here on WUS. He's based in the Netherlands, so depends on where you are as to how much you spend. I'm pleased with the 2 I'm currently using. I have the other two in reserve for two other projects.
This is what I did with them so far.

I'm going to revive this thread as the original title is applicable to my question. Is there a better source or deal to be had on a Swiss ETA 6497 other than the $186 I see on ofrei.com?
ETA Mechanical Watch Movements
You may have to wait a while, ETA movements do not seem to be dipping in prices.
I would go SEAGULL clone.
Wife: Don't you have enough watches?
Me: Don't you have enough earrings?
Wife: So, you're saying that watches are jewelry for Men?
Me: That's exactly what I'm saying.
Wife: Let's go shopping.
And that's how I got my last watch...
You can find a Unitas 6498 (Same as ETA 6498) from a vintage pocket watch through eBay for around $70 to practice with. Arnex used a lot of the Unitas movements in their pocket watches and they are fairly bulletproof. I was able to find a nice decorated movement that only needed a minor tuneup for <$65. You can also find a seagull (chinese clone) for pretty cheap too. Practice with these before investing in a quality ETA 6498 through OFREI.
